PSALM 25.

Appeal to God's mercy for pardon and direction.

1 SHEW me thy ways, O Lord,

And all thy truth display;

Thou art my Saviour and my God,

My hope from day to day.

2 Thy mercy and thy love,
Ŏ Lord, recall to mind;
And graciously continue still,
As thou wert ever, kind.

3 Let all my youthful crimes
Be blotted out by thee;
And for thy goodness' sake, O Lord,
In mercy think on me.

4 I plead thy gracious name,
And thee, O Lord, entreat,
To grant me pardon for my sin,
Which heinous is and great,

5 Preserve and keep my soul,
And still deliver me;

And let me not be overthrown,
Because I trust in thee.

Reliance on divine guidance.

6 HIS mercy and his truth,

The righteous Lord displays,
In bringing wand'ring sinners home,
And teaching them his ways.

7 He those in justice guides

Who his direction seek:

And in his sacred path will lead
The humble and the meek.

8 Through all the ways of God
Both truth and mercy shine,
For such as with religious hearts
To his blest will incline.

66

9 To those that fear his name
His secret he imparts;

And will his gracious cov❜nant write
In their obedient hearts.

10 To all thy chosen race,

Be, Lord, for ever kind;

And in the midst of all their wants

May they thy succour find.

PSALM 26.

Simplicity and godly sincerity," appealing to God, and rely. ing on his grace.

1 JUDGE me, O Lord; thy searching eyes
My faithfulness shall prove :
On thee my stedfast soul relies,
Nor shall my footsteps move.

2 O search me still; my heart, my reins,
With strictest view survey;

Thy love, O Lord, my hope sustains,
Thy truth directs my way.

3 The house of guile, the seat of lies,
With studious care I shun;
From all that impious deeds devise
My feet abhorrent run.

4 I wash my hands in innocence,
And round thy altar go;

Utter my glad thanksgivings thence,
And all thy wonders shew.

5 Fervent how oft with warmth divine
Thy threshold have I trod!

How lov'd the courts whose walls inshrine
The glory of my God!

6 Save me, O Lord; and, while I tread
The path by thee prepar'd,

Shed beams of mercy on my head,
And from each danger guard.

PSALM 27.

God our defence, and his Church our refuge. 1 THE Lord of glory is my light, And my salvation too;

God is my strength; nor will I fear
What all my foes can do.

2 One privilege my heart desires;
O grant me an abode

Among the churches of the saints,
The temples of my God.

3 There shall I offer my requests,
And see thy beauty still;
Shall hear thy messages of love,
And there inquire thy will.

4 When troubles rise, and storms appear,
There may thy children hide;
God has a strong pavilion, where
He makes my soul abide.

5 Now shall my head be lifted high
Above my foes around;
And songs of victory and praise
Within thy temple sound.

Encouragement to wait on the Lord.

6 HARK! 'tis Jehovah's voice invites! He bids us seek his face:

Thy face, O Lord, we gladly seek;-
O show thy wonted grace.

7 God of our life, thy pow'rful aid
Is still to mem'ry dear:-

Forsake us not; but guard our way,

In ev'ry danger near.

8 Long since our fainting soul had sunk With sorrow compass'd round;

Had we not trusted that our life
Should with thy love be crown'd.

9 Wait on the Lord; fresh courage take,
Relying on his word;

For he will inward strength impart-
O wait upon the Lord.

PSALM 28.

Thanks for divine protection.

1 TO render thanks unto the Lord,
How great a cause have I,

My voice, my pray'r, and my complaint,
Who hears so willingly!

2 He is my shield and fortitude,
My buckler in distress:

My heart rejoiceth in his name,
My song shall him confess.

3 He is our strength and our defence,
Our foes for to resist:

The refuge and the saving health
Of his elect by Christ.

4 Thy people and thy heritage,

Lord, bless, guide, and preserve: Increase them, Lord, and rule their hearts, That they may never swerve.

PSALM 29.

The supreme dominion and power of the God of thunder, both in providence and grace.

1 YE sons of might, the LORD proclaim;
Glory and pow'r to Him assign;
Confess His great and glorious name;
Worship before his holy shrine.

2 Jehovah's voice commands the sea;
Jehovah's voice in thunder rolls;
Jehovah's voice is majesty;

Jehovah's voice the world controls.

3 Jehovah's voice the cedar breaks;

The mountains quake, the hills rebound;
Jehovah's voice the desert shakes,

And darts the forked lightning round.

4 Jehovah's voice the beast dismays,
And lays the forest thickets bare-
His house his majesty displays,
And men will speak his honour there.
5 Above the floods Jehovah reigns;
Jehovah's sway shall never cease;
His people he with strength sustains;
And blesses with unfailing peace.

PSALM 30.

Thanksgiving for the recovery of health, or for the preservation of it in general sickness.--See 1 Chron. xxi. xxii. as the probable occasion.

1 O LORD, I will declare thy praise,
And sing thy pow'r to save;
Thou didst attend my cry, and raise
Thy servant from the grave.

2 Ye saints, Jehovah's love proclaim,
And thank our gracious Lord;
Declare the honours of his name,
His holiness record.

3 Not longer than a moment's space
His anger he retains;
But in his favour and his grace
Unceasing life remains.

4 Though heaviness and anguish sore,
Dwell with us thro' the night;
The Lord shall joy to us restore
With the returning light.
