Sinners, attend the sound,
Come near to Him, and own,
Our righteousness and strength is found
In thee, the Lord, alone.

[blocks in formation]

And see their guilt forgiv'n;

The Lord will make his Israel just,

And take his saints to heaven.

HYMN 110.

God's love to the Church unchangeable. Isai. xlix. 13---15.
I NOW shall our inward joys arise,
And burst into a song;
Almighty love inspires the heart,
And pleasures tune the tongue.

2 God, on his thirsty Zion hill,

Some mercy-drops has thrown;
And solemn oaths have bound his love
To shower salvation down.

3 Why do we then indulge our fears,
Suspicions, and complaints?

Is he a God? and shall his

Grow weary of his saints?

grace

4 "No," saith the Lord, "should nature change, "And mothers monsters prove, "Zion still dwells upon the heart

"Of everlasting love."

HYMN 111.

Comfort for mourning believers. Isai, I. 10.

1 WHO fears the lord, with faithful mind,
Yet walks in shades of night?
Who follows Christ, yet cannot find
The path of cheering light?

2 Still in the Lord thy God confide,
Depend upon his power:

Through gloomy night he still will guide,
And in thy darkest hour.

3 But kindle no unhallow'd fire,

To light your darken'd path;
Lest, if he grant us our desire,
He send therewith his wrath.
HYMN 112.

The Lord prayed to, as mighty to save. Isai liv. 9.--11.
1 ARM of the Lord,-awake! awake!
Assume thy mighty strength once more.
Thy people's foes with terror shake,
Again, as in the days of yore.

2 As in the ancient days appear!

Thy rescued Israel prais'd thy name.
Be now omnipotently near,

To endless ages still the same.

3 Then shall thy flock, pursu'd in vain,
With singing be to Zion led;
Gladness, for sorrow, they shall gain,
And joys eternal crown their head.

HYMN 113.

The Gospel proclaimed. Isai. lii. 7--10. Rom. x. 15.

1

HOW beauteous are their feet

Who stand on Zion's hill!

Who bring salvation on their tongues,
And words of peace reveal!

2 How charming is their voice,
How glad the tidings are!
Zion, behold thy Saviour King;
God reigns and triumphs here.
Salem, break forth in Songs!
Thy watchmen lift their voice:

The Lord will comfort and redeem;
Let deserts round rejoice.

The Lord makes bare his arm

Thro' all the earth abroad;

And every Nation shall behold

Their Saviour and their God.

The humiliation of Christ. Isai. liii. 1---5.

1 WHO will receive with cordial faith

The tidings that we bring?

And who hath seen the arm reveal'd
Of heaven's Eternal King?

2 Behold Him, as a tender flower,
In the dry desert rise;

No earthly beauty shines in him,
To draw the carnal eyes.

2 By man rejected, slighted, scorn'd,
Behold a man of woe!

But griefs and sorrows not his own
He bore on earth below.

4 Man deem'd him one condemn'd of heaven, An outcast from his God;

For human sin he groan'd and bled
Beneath his Father's rod.

5 His sacred blood hath wash'd our souls
From sin's polluting stain;
His stripes our healing were, that we
Might peace with God regain.

HYMN 115.

The death of Christ. Isai. liii. 6---10.

1 LIKE wand'ring sheep we all had stray'd, And left the fold of God.

On Him were our transgressions laid;
He bore the mighty load.

2 Th' afflicted Shepherd 'midst his foes
In patient silence stood,

Submissive as the peaceful lamb,
When brought to shed its blood.
3 Through force, permitted from above,
To man's tribunal led,—

Who shall His Generation tell,
Though number'd with the dead?

4 Join'd with the wicked in his death,

A grave the rich supplied.

Yet no deceit had stain'd his life;
Harmless and pure he died.

5 'Twas God that will'd his varied woe,
And we that grace adore;

His soul, for sinners offer'd
Shall live for evermore.

HYMN 116.

once,

Christ a glorified Saviour. Isai. liii. 10---12.
1 O LORD, exalt the Saviour's name;
Be all thy pleasure wrought!
And joy to the Redeemer's soul
For all his travail brought!

20 may thy knowledge fill the earth!
Increase the number still

Of those, who in thy word believe,
And do thy holy will.

3 Christ with the great shall share the spoil,
And baffle all his foes.

He, number'd with transgressors, died;
But as a conqu❜ror rose.

4 He died, to bear the guilt of men,
That they might be forgiven:
He lives, to bless them, and defend,
And plead their cause in heaven.

HYMN 117.

The invitation of divine mercy. Isaiah lv. 1.-3.
I Ho! ye that thirst, approach the spring
Where living waters flow;

Free to that sacred fountain, all,
Without a price, may go.

2 How long to streams of false delight
Will ye in crowds repair?

How long your strength and substance waste On trifles light as air?

[ocr errors]

3" My stores of grace," Jehovah cries,
"Both health and pleasure give;
Incline your ear, and come to me;
"Hear, and your soul shall live.
4 "With you a cov'nant I will make
"That ever shall endure;

"A hope divine my word reveals,
"And David's mercies sure."

HYMN 118.

The certainty of God's mercy in Christ. Isai. lv. 4---13. I BEHOLD he comes! our Leader comes, With might and honour crown'd;

A witness for Jehovah's name

To earth's remotest bounds.

2 See! nations hasten to his call
From every distant shore;
People unknown shall bow to him,
And Israel's God adore.

3 0, seek the Lord, while yet his ear
Is open to your call;
While mercy still is waiting near,
Before his footstool fall.

4 His ways are high beyond our thought;
His grace our hope transcends;

His word, once given, shall not return,
But work what he intends.

5 Joy shall attend his people's march,
And peace protect their ways;
And earth shall echo all around
Their songs of grateful praise.
HYMN 119.

Divine condescension and mercy. Isai. lvii. 15. 16.

1 GOD is the high and lofty one,

Inhabiting Eternity!

Holy His name, and high His throne
Beyond the starry sky.
