PSALM 22

Prue to Gui ir us potuse

1 YE righton, à de Lari zemes,
To him your PIÙCES TURI

For well the rig team I becomes
To sing glat wings of praise.

3 Whate'er the mighty Lord dez
Shall stand for ever wire;

His commsels, an in W WEL
To ages shall endure.

Prause to God Fr les catag power.

4 REJOICE ye righteous, in the Lord, This work belongs to you:

Size of his name, his ways, his word,
Most holy, just, and true.

5 His wisdom and almighty word
The heavenly arches spread;
And by the Spirit of the Lord

Their shining hosts were made.

6 He bid the liquid waters flow
To their appointed deep;
The flowing seas their limits know,
And their own station keep.

7 Ye tenants of the spacious earth,
With awe before him stand;
He spake, and nature took its birth,
And rests at his command.

Praise to God for his providential care.

S HOW blest are they to whom the Lord
As God and Guide is known!

Whom he, from all the world beside,
Has chosen for his own.

9 Behold, the Lord on all his saints
Looks down with gracious eyes;
His mercy saves their souls from death,
And ev'ry want supplies.

10 Our soul on Him with patience waits, Our help and shield is He;

In thee, O Lord, our hearts rejoice,
Because we trust in thee.

11 The riches of thy mercy, Lord,
Do thou to us extend;

Since we, for all we want or wish,
On thee alone depend.

PSALM 34.

Commemoration of the divine goodness.

1 THRO' all the changing scenes of life, In trouble and in joy,

The praises of my God shall still
My heart and tongue employ.

2 Of his deliv'rance I will boast;
And all that are distrest

Shall of my thankful joy partake,
And soothe their grief to rest.
3 0 magnify the Lord with me,
With me exalt his name;
When in distress to him I pray'd,
He to my rescue came.

4 Thus all the saints before his throne
Their anxious care disclos'd;
He made their face to beam with joy,
And ev'ry fear compos'd.

Mutual exhortation to confidence in God.

5 THE hosts of God encamp around
The dwellings of the just;
Protection he affords to all,
Who on his succour trust.

6 O make but trial of his love;
Experience will decide

How blest are they, and only they,
Who in his truth confide.

7 Fear him, ye saints; and you will then
Have nothing else to fear;
Make you his service your delight,
He'll make your wants his care.

8 Young lions thro' the desert roam,
And search in vain for food;
But God will all his saints provide
With ev'ry needful good.

PSALM 36.

The attributes of God contrasted with the disposition of those
who are destitute of his fear.
WITHIN my heart I spake,
There error's source I saw;

1

The wicked, Lord, thy fear forsake,
Then boldly break thy law.

2 With self-delusion blind,

3

4

5

They hide their crimes within;
Till God by strict inquiry find
And manifest their sin.

Their words from truth depart,
Deceit is on their tongue;

Wisdom is banish'd from their heart,
They haste to practise wrong.

Thy mercies, Lord, transcend

The heav'ns exalted high,

Thy truth and faithfulness extend

Beyond the lofty sky.

Firm as the mountain's base,

Thy righteousness we own;

Who can thy wondrous judgments trace?
Those awful depths unknown!

The providence and grace of God.

6 O LORD, thy providential care
The favour'd race of man sustains;
And for the beasts thy hands prepare
The fruitful fields, and flow'ry plains.
7 Since of thy goodness all partake,

With what assurance should the just
Thy shelt'ring wings their refuge make,
And saints to thy protection trust.

8 Such guests shall to thy courts be led,
To banquet on thy love's repast;
And drink, as from a fountain's head,
Of joys that shall for ever last.

9 With thee the springs of life remain,
Thy presence is eternal day;
O let thy saints thy favour gain;

To upright hearts thy truth display.
VERSION II.

1 HIGH as the heav'ns, eternal God,
Thy goodness in full glory shines;
Thy truth shall break through ev'ry cloud
That veils and darkens thy designs.

2 For ever firm thy justice stands,

As mountains their foundations keep;
Wise are the wonders of thy hands,
Thy judgments are a mighty deep.
3 Thy providence is kind and large,
Both man and beast thy bounty share;
The whole creation is thy charge,
But saints are thy peculiar care.

4 MY God! how excellent thy grace, Whence all our hope and comfort springs! The sons of Adam in distress

Fly to the shelter of thy wings.

5 From the provisions of thy house
We shall be fed with sweet repast;
There mercy, like a river, flows,
And brings salvation to our taste.
6 Life, like a fountain rich and free,
Springs from the presence of our Lord;
And in thy light our souls shall see
The glories promis'd in thy word.

PSALM 37.

Sinful anxiety condemned.

1 LET not the sinner's wealth or might
The envy of thy soul excite:

Anon thine eye shall see him fade,
Quick as the flow'r, or vernal blade.
