7 By them thy boundless power is shown,
Thy glorious kingdom, Lord;

Thy mighty acts shall they make known,
Thy majesty record.

8 Thy kingdom, from all changes free,
Shall stand for ever fast;

No end shall thy dominion see,
But time itself outlast.

The providential goodness of God, especially in answering the prayers of his people.

9 GOD helps his people, when they fall;
And makes the prostrate rise.
For food his waiting creatures call;—
His bounteous hand supplies.

10 Just is the Lord in all his ways,
And holy his designs;
And round the faithful, when he

His gracious presence shines.

prays,

11 He grants the full desire of those,
Who Him with fear adore;
His willing mercy soothes their woes,
When they His aid implore.

12 Who love the Lord, partake his care;
But sinners feel his rod.

Let all of mortal race declare,
The praise of Thee, our God!

PSALM 146.

Resolution to praise God, while life and being are continued. 1 PRAISE God, while yet He lends us breath: And, when our voice is lost in death,

Praise shall employ still nobler powers; Our days of praise shall ne'er be past, While life, and thought, and being last, Or immortality endures.

Y2

Reliance cannot be placed on any mortal being, but in the eternal and unchangeable Jehovah.

2 O PRAISE the Lord: and thou, my soul, For ever bless his name.

His wondrous love, while life shall last,
Our constant praise shall claim.

3 On kings, the greatest sons of men,
Let none rely for aid;

Trust not in merely human power,
When threatening ills invade.

4 Depriv'd of breath, men turn to dust,
And to the grave descend;
Together with their transient life
Their thoughts and counsels end.

5 Then happy he, who Jacob's God,
For his protector takes.

And happy, who the Lord his God
His hope and refuge makes.

Encouragement to trust in Jehovah, derived from a view of his power and goodness.

6 HAPPY the man whose thoughts rely On Israel's God: he made the sky,

And earth, and seas, with all their train.

His truth for ever stands secure;

He saves th' opprest, he feeds the poor;

And none shall find his promise vain.

7 The Lord pours eye-sight on the blind;
The Lord supports the fainting mind;
He sends the lab'ring conscience peace.
He helps the stranger in distress,
The widow and the fatherless;

And grants the pris'ner sweet release.

8 He loves his saints, he knows them well;
But turns the wicked down to hell.

Thy God, O Zion, ever reigns.
Let ev'ry tongue, let ev'ry age,
In this exalted work engage;

Praise him in everlasting strains.

PSALM 147.

God's care of his Church and people; and his power and wisdom in his works and dealings.

1 PRAISE ye the Lord: 'tis good to raise
Our hearts and voices in His praise:
His nature and his works invite
To make this duty our delight.
2 The Lord builds up Jerusalem,
And gathers nations to his name:
His mercy melts the stubborn soul,
And makes the broken spirit whole.

3 He form'd the stars, those heavenly flames,
He counts their numbers, calls their names:
His wisdom's vast, and knows no bound,
A deep, where all our thoughts are drown'd.
4 Great is our Lord, and great his might,
And all his glories infinite;

He crowns the meek, rewards the just,
And treads the wicked to the dust.

God's general providence, and peculiar favour to his people.

5 SING, and give thanks to God most high,
Who with his clouds o'erspreads the sky;
There he prepares the fruitful rain,
Nor sends the genial showers in vain.
6 He makes the grass the hills adorn,
And clothes the smiling fields with corn:
Gives to the beasts their wonted food,
And feeds the ravens' hungry brood.

Let all creation join

Their Maker's praise to tell:
His glories, all divine,

Your highest praise excel.

Earth's utmost ends His power obey;
His boundless sway The sky transcends.

He sets his saints on high,
And will to glory raise;
They to his heart are nigh,
And He their constant praise.

Ye saints below,

Who near Him dwell,

His praises tell,

His wonders show.

VERSION II.

1 BEGIN, my soul, th' exalted lay,
Let each enraptur'd thought obey,
And praise th' Almighty Name:
Lo! heaven and earth, and seas and skies,
In one melodious concert rise

To swell th' inspiring theme.

2 Let man,-by nobler passions sway'd,-
The feeling heart, the judging head,
In heavenly praise employ;
Spread his tremendous name around,

Till heaven's broad arch rings back the sound,
The gen❜ral burst of joy.

VERSION III.

1 PRAISE the Lord! Ye heavens, adore him:
Praise him, angels, in the height:
Sun and moon, rejoice before him;
Praise him, all ye stars and light.

2 Praise the Lord! for he hath spoken!
Worlds his mighty voice obey'd:
Laws, that never shall be broken,
For their guidance he hath made.

3 Praise the Lord! for He is glorious;
Never shall his promise fail:
He hath made his saints victorious,
Sin and death shall not prevail.
4 Praise the God of our salvation!
Hosts on high, his power proclaim:
Heaven and earth, and all creation,
Laud and magnify his name.

PSALM 149.

A song of thanksgiving for the spiritual triumphs of Messiah, and his Church.---Compare I Cor. vi. 2, 3; Eph. vi. 17; Rev. ii. 12, 16.

1 O PRAISE ye the Lord: prepare a new song; His praises, ye saints, in full concert sing: To God, your Creator, the anthem prolong, And let Zion's children be glad in their King. 2 Be joyful, ye saints, sustain'd by his might;

And let your glad songs awake with the morn. For all that obey him are still his delight; His hand with salvation the meek will adorn. 3 In glory rejoice;--the Lord draweth near!

O let your glad mouth with praises be fill'd. He comes in His glory;—his judgments appear: The sword of the Spirit your right-hand`shall wield.

4 Triumphant, ye saints, his Kingdom proclaim: With Him ye appear, His triumphs attend.How just is His judgment! how faithful His name!

Let praise to Jehovah for ever ascend.

PSALM 150.

A call to praise God, for his glorious excellencies and mighty acts, with the harmony of instruments, and the concurrence of all that breathe.

1 PRAISE the LORD, who reigns above,

And keeps his court below;

Praise the holy God of love,
And all his greatness show.
