EIGHTS. (Couplets.)

12 Immortal honour, endless fame,
Ascribe to God the Father's name!
Let God the Son be glorified,
Who for lost man's redemption died!
And equal adoration be,

O God the Comforter, to Thee!

13 To the blest Three, in Godhead One,
The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Be everlasting honour done

By men, and by the heavenly host;
As was in ages heretofore,

Is now, and shall be evermore.

EIGHTS. (Triplets.)

14 To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
The God, whom heaven's triumphant host,
And suff'ring saints on earth adore;
Be Glory,-as in ages past,

As now it is, and still shall last,
When time itself shall be no more.
8. 8. 6.

15 Eternal Father, gracious Son,
Immortal Spirit,―Three in One!
To Thee our songs we raise.
Thy Name, Jehovah, we adore,
Thus shall thy Church, for evermore,
Prolong the notes of praise.
TENS.

16 Hail Heavenly Father! Hail Eternal Son!
Hail Sacred Spirit! Three in Godhead One!
Glory and blessing, praise and power divine,
Thrice Holy Lord! be now, and ever, Thine!

17 Glory supreme to our Jehovah's name,

To Father, Son, and Spirit be addrest: Glory supreme let heaven and earth proclaim To God,-for ever and for ever blest.

AS OLD 50th.

18 In noblest strains that earth below can raise,
Now let His church Jehovah's glories praise;
The Father bless, the Son, and Spirit own,
One God supreme, on one eternal throne:
As ages past, thy church will now adore Thee,
Till endless songs rise in the realms of glory.
AS OLD 104th.

19 By angels of heaven, of ev'ry degree,

And saints upon earth, all praise be addrest To God in three persons, One God ever blest, As it has been, now is, and always shall be. 20 All glory to God,—the Father, and Son, And Spirit of grace,-the great Three in One! Let highest ascriptions for ever be given, By all the creation, in earth and in heaven. AS OLD 148th.

21

To God the Father, Son,
And Spirit, ever blest,
Eternal Three in One,
All honour be addrest;

As heretofore

And shall be so

It was, is now,

For evermore.

22 To God the Father's name

Perpetual honours raise;

Glory to God the Son,

To God the Spirit praise.

Let ceaseless praise to God be given,
By all in earth, and all in heaven.
As Ps. 150. (Version 3.)

23 Lo, Jehovah, we adore Thee,
God the Father, God the Son,
God the Spirit;-join'd in glory
On the same eternal throne.

HALLELUJAH! To the Three in Godhead One!

As Ps. 150. (Version 2.)

24 Thee, Jehovah, we adore;
The Father, and the Son,
With the Spirit, source of power,
The Three, in Godhead One:
As thro' endless ages past,

Let the Church their anthems raise;
And, while endless ages last,
Prolong the notes of praise.

Ps. 103. (Version 3.)

25 Heavenly Father, we adore Thee;
Equal honours yield the Son,
With the Spirit, Lord of glory,

One in Three, and Three in One:
So Thy praises, as of old,

Shall thro' endless years be told.

2 Cor. xiii, 14.

26 May the grace of Christ our Saviour, And the Father's boundless love, With the holy Spirit's favour,

Rest upon us from above!

May we thus abide in union

With each other, and the Lord:

And possess, in sweet communion,
Joys which earth cannot afford.

ANGELS' SONG. (Sanctus.)

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord most High.

Doxology in the Communion Service.

Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord most High.

HYMNS.

ON SUBJECTS SUGGESTED BY THE EVENTS, SONGS, TYPES, AND PROPHECIES OF THE OLD TESTAMENT.

HYMN 1.

In the beginning God created, &c. Gen. i. 1. 1 THOU didst, ETERNAL GOD, exist Ere time began its race;

Before the globe, or starry spheres,
Fill'd up the voids of space.

2 Ere men ador'd, or angels knew,

Or prais'd thy wondrous name:—
Thy bliss, O sacred spring of life!-
And glory, were the same.

3 And, when the pillars of the world
With sudden ruin break;

And all this vast and goodly frame
Sinks in the mighty wreck;-

4 When from her orb the moon shall start,
Th' astonish'd sun roll back;-
When all the trembling starry lamps
Their ancient course forsake;—

5 Thou art immutably the same,
From agitation free;

Unchang'd, in everlasting years,
Shall Thy existence be!

Aa

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished. Gen. ii. 1.
1 WE sing the mighty power of God
Who bade the mountains rise;
Who spread the flowing seas abroad,
And built the lofty skies.

2 We sing the wisdom that ordain'd
The sun to rule the day;

The moon shines full at his command,
And countless stars obey.

3 We sing the goodness of the Lord,
Who fill'd the earth with food;
Who form'd all creatures by his word,-
And then pronounc'd them good.

4 Great God! while nature speaks thy praise
With all her num'rous tongues,
Thy saints shall tune diviner lays,
And love inspire their songs.
HYMN 3.

[ocr errors]

Creation of man in the image of God. Gen. i. 27; ii. 7. 1 THE glories of his Maker, Gon, Man's grateful voice shall sing;

And call the nations to adore

Their Former, and their King.

2 'Twas his right-hand that shap'd our clay,
And wrought this wondrous frame:
But from his own inspiring breath
Our nobler spirits came.

3 We bring our mortal powers to God,
And worship with our tongues;
We claim some kindred with the skies,
And join th' angelic songs.

4 Angels, the eldest sons of God,

The joyful song began,

When earth's foundation first was laid,
And God created man.
