5 Keep then the feast with hearts sincere;
The leaven of sin remove;

For Christ to his redeem'd draws near,
Their guide to realms above.

HYMN 26.

The Song of Moses, after the overthrow of the Egyptians. Exod. xv. 1---21.

1 SING to the LORD! His glorious triumph tell;
How Ocean's waves on Egypt's thousands fell.
Our strength is He;-from Him salvation came;
Our Father's God,-JEHOVAH is his name.
Glorious in power, his lifted hand is strong;
O let His glorious triumphs be your song!
2 His morning breath from their unwonted sleep
Arous'd the fetter'd waters of the deep;
Whelm'd was the foe beneath their strength
restor❜d.-

Glorious in holiness art Thou, O Lord!
Fearful in praises! wondrous in thy ways!
O let Thy glorious triumphs wake our praise!
3 By mercy rescued, and by mercy led,

Jehovah's flock a guarded pathway tread;
He will conduct them through retiring foes,
Till on His holy mountain they repose.

'Tis there He dwells;-our King for ever strong: O let His glorious triumphs be our song!

HYMN 27.

Christ the bread of life, &c. Exod. xvi, xvii.---John iv, 6.

1 LET us adore th' Eternal Word,!

'Tis He our souls hath fed:

Thou art the living stream, O Lord!

And thou the living bread.

2 The manna came from lower skies;
But Jesus from above,

Where the fresh springs of pleasure rise,
And rivers flow with love.

3 The Jews, the fathers, died at last,
Who ate that heavenly bread;
But the provision that we taste,
Can raise us from the dead.

4 Blest be the Lord, who gives his fleshi
To nourish dying men;
And often spreads his table fresh,
Lest we should faint again.

5 Daily our mortal flesh decays,
But Christ our life shall come;
And his almighty power shall raise
Our bodies from the tomb.

6 Meanwhile, throughout this desert way,
Conduct us by thy light;

Be, Lord, a shadowing cloud by day,
A cheering fire by night.

HYMN 28.

Condemnation by the Law (Exod. xx) ;---hope through the Gospel.

1 FROM Sinai's mount, in might array'd, The Lord his holy law display'd;

Through heaven and earth its mandates fly, "Do this and live-transgress and die." 2 "Do this and live!"-O who may stand Before that precept's strict command? "Transgress and die!"-then all are dead, And every hope of life is fled.

3 But from the cross a voice of peace
Bids Sinai's awful thunder cease;
Sinner! those sounds of love obey,
From Christ, the truth, the life, the way!
4 How else his presence wilt thou bear,
When He in judgment shall appear ?
When slighted love to wrath shall turn
And all the earth like Sinai burn.

The Law and the Gospel.

1 THE Law commands, and makes us know What duties to our God we owe.

The Law discovers guilt and sin,

And shows how vile our hearts have been.
2 What curses doth the Law denounce
Against the man that sins but once!
But, in the Gospel, Christ appears
Pard'ning the guilt of num'rous years.
3 My soul, no more attempt to draw
Thy life and comfort from the Law.
Fly to the hope the Gospel gives;
The soul that trusts the promise—lives.
4 Only the Gospel can express

Forgiving love and cleansing grace;
Only the Gospel can reveal

Whence comes our strength to do God's will.

HYMN 30.

The Name of the Lord. Ex. xxxiii. 18.-23. xxxiv. 1.-7.

1 GRANT us, O Lord, thy heavenly light;
Thy perfect attributes proclaim:
Dispel the gloom of nature's night;
Reveal the glories of thy Name.

2 When Moses would thy glory know,
Thou didst thy glorious Name declare;
To him, in part, thy glory show,

Far as his mortal frame could bear.

3 "THE LORD! compassionate and kind;-
THE LORD! to anger ever slow ;-
Fountain of truth! whose gracious mind
A thousand generations know."

4 "THE LORD his pard'ning love reveals
To thousands, who of sin repent;
The contrite sinner's heart he heals;
While on the guilty wrath is sent."

5" THE LORD to each succeeding race
Will visit man's continued crimes;
Yet rich is his abounding grace
Throughout all places, and all times."

ISRAEL, in ancient days,
Not only had a view

Of Sinai's awful blaze,

But learn'd the Gospel too.
The ritual of their law pourtrays
The method of redeeming grace.
The lamb, the dove,-set forth
His perfect innocence,

Whose blood, of matchless worth,
Should be the soul's defence.
For he, who could for sin atone,
Had no trangression of his own.
The scape-goat on his head
The people's trespass bore;
And, to the desert led,

Was to be seen no more.

In him our surety seem'd to say,
66 Behold! I bear your sins away."

Dipt in his fellow's blood,

The living bird went free:

The figure understood

Will teach the sinner's plea; Describes a guilty soul discharg'd,

And through the Saviour's death enlarg'd.

Jesus, we love to trace,

Throughout the sacred page,
The footsteps of thy grace,

The same in ev'ry age.

But more we prize, and would obey,
The clearer light of Gospel day.

Faith in Christ our Sacrifice.

NOT all the blood of beasts

On Jewish altars slain;

Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Or wash away the stain.

But CHRIST, the heav'nly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away;

A sacrifice of nobler name,

And richer blood than they.

By faith I lay mine hand
On that dear head of thine,
While like a penitent I stand,
And there confess my sin.

My soul looks back to see

The burdens thou didst bear,

When hanging on th' accursed tree,
And hopes her guilt was there.

Believing we rejoice

To see the curse remove;

We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice,
And sing his dying love.

HYMN 33.

Christ's holiness, glory, and intercession for his people, typified by the Urim and Thummim (lights and perfections), and the other priestly vestments. Lev. viii. 7 -9, compared with Exod. xxviii.

1 NOW let our cheerful eyes survey
Our great High-priest above;
His glories tell, his constant care,
And sympathising love.

2 In him a holiness complete,

And grace, and glory, shine;
Wisdom, and truth, and righteousness,
Proclaim him all divine.
