3 Light and perfection beam around,
As on his breastplate worn!
He sheds the sacred light of truth
To teach and to adorn.

4 The names of all his saints he bears
Deep graven on his heart;
Nor shall the meanest christian say
That he hath lost his part.

5 Those characters shall fair abide,
Our everlasting trust,

When gems, and monuments, and crowns,
Are moulder'd down to dust.

HYMN 34.

Aaron and Christ. Exod. xxix. Lev. i, ix. and Heb. vii, ix.
1 JESUS, in Thee our eyes behold
A thousand glories more

Than mystic robes, and gems, and gold,
Which Aaron's priesthood wore.

2 They first their own burnt-off'rings brought
To purge themselves from sin;-
Thy life was pure, without a spot,
And all thy nature clean.

3 Fresh blood, on each returning day,
Was on their altars spilt;-

But thy one offering takes away
For ever all our guilt.

4 Their priesthood pass'd to other hands,
For mortal was their race;

Thy never-changing priesthood stands
Eternal as thy days.

HYMN 35.

Christ fulfils for ever the expiation and intercession typically made once a year by the High-priest in the Holy of Holies. Ex. xxx. 10.---Lev. xvi.---Heb. viii.---ix.

1 SEE the High-priest, before the throne,

Within the veil appear;

And sprinkle blood, but not his own,
Once in each circling year.

2 With the atoning blood he stands
Before the mercy-seat;

And clouds of incense from his hands
Arise with odour sweet.

3 But Christ, with his own precious blood,
Ascends above the skies;

And there, before the throne of God,
Shows his own sacrifice.

4 There the sweet incense of his
prayers
Surrounds the throne of grace;
In that blest temple he prepares
For all his saints a place.

HYMN 36.

The fire shall ever be burning on the altar. See Lev. vi. 8--13.

1 0 THOU, who camest from above, The fire celestial to impart!

Kindle a flame of sacred love

On the mean altar of my heart.

2 There let it for thy glory burn,
With inextinguishable blaze;
And, trembling, to its source return

In humble prayer, and fervent praise.

3 Jesus, confirm my heart's desire

To work, and speak, and think for Thee;
Still let me guard the holy fire,
And still stir up thy gift in me.

4 Ready for all thy perfect will,

My acts of faith and love repeat,
Till death thy endless mercies seal,
And make the sacrifice complete.

Lev. XXV.---Numb. x.---Isai. lxi.---
Luke iv. 18.

WITH gladly solemn sound
The silver trumpets blow!
To earth's remotest bound

Let all the nations know-
The year of Jubilee is come!
Return, ye ransom'd sinners, home.
Prisoners of hope, in gloom
And silence left to die,
With Christ's unfolding tomb,
Your portals open fly;

Rise with your Lord;-He sets you free;
It is the year of Jubilee.

Ye, who have sold for nought
The land your Fathers won,
Behold how God hath wrought
Redemption through his Son;
Your heritage again is free,
It is the year of Jubilee.

Ye, who yourselves have sold
For debts to justice due,
Ransom'd, but not with gold,
He gave Himself for you:

The blood of Christ hath made you free;
It is the year of Jubilee.

Captives of sin and shame,

O'er earth and ocean, hear
An angel's voice proclaim
The Lord's accepted year:
Let Jacob rise, be Israel free,
It is the year of Jubilee.

HYMN 38.

The priestly benediction.- -Numb. vi. 25, 26. 1 O LORD, to bless our souls incline, And keep us by thy love:

O LORD, display thy beams divine,
And ever gracious prove:

2 O LORD, thy reconciled face

Now, and for ever, show;

Cheer us with thy forgiving grace,
And all thy peace bestow.

HYMN 39.

The Brazen Serpent. Numbers xxi.---John iii. 14. 1 WHEN poison, spreading through their veins, Made Israel mourn their sin, Eternal mercy eas'd their pains, And heal'd the grief within.

2 A brazen serpent high was raised,
Their healing to procure;

The wounded look'd, the living praised,
The dying found a cure.

3 See Jesus crucified and slain!
Behold him raised on high!

'Tis he can save from endless pain,— O look, and never die!

4 When God's own son is lifted up,
A dying world revives:

The Jew beholds the glorious hope,
The Gentile looks, and lives.

HYMN 40.

Let me die the death of the righteous. Numb. xxiii. 10.

1

HOW blest the righteous are, When they resign their breath! Balaam might well desire to share Such peace and hope in death. 2 "Oh! let me die," said he, "The death the righteous do; "When life is ended, Oh! let me "Die like the faithful few."

3

But ah! his wish was vain,
His heart was insincere;

He thirsted for unrighteous gain;

He sought a portion here.

4 The force of truth, how great! Its enemies confess,

5

Only the righteous, whom they hate,
Can solid hope possess.

God warns us from on high,

And grace and glory gives;
Pray like the righteous man to die,

But choose the life he lives.

HYMN 41.

The Prophecy of Balaam. Numb. xxiv. 17--19. 1 "I SHALL behold him, but not now! "I shall behold him, but not nigh! "He comes to break th' oppressor's power, "He comes to suffer, weep, and die! “Then shall his hand new triumphs gain,"Satan destroy-for ever reign!"

2 Foretold by the reluctant seer

THE STAR is out of JACOB come:
The promis'd sceptre did appear,
Messiah's foes receiv'd their doom.
That Star its blaze on earth has pour'd,
And manifested Israel's Lord.

3 Yet come, thou radiant morning Star,
Again in human darkness shine;
Arise, resplendent from afar;

Messiah, claim thy power divine.
Begin thy perfect glorious reign;
Thy sway o'er all the earth maintain.

HYMN 42.

Thou shalt remember all the way. Deut. viii. 2.

1 THRO' all life's dark and rugged way,
What scenes of love doth God display!
How wise, how kind his holy will!
Remember how he leads thee still
