3 The land, thro' which his pilgrims go,
Is desolate and dry;

From Him the streams of blessing flow
Their thirst to satisfy.

4 Should persecution's burning sun
Make earth a weary land,

To the great Rock they gladly run
Whose shadow is at hand.

5 How glorious He! how happy they
With Him their mighty friend!
Whose love secures them all the way,
And crowns them at the end.
HYMN 99.

The joyful flourishing of Christ's kingdom. Isai. xxxv. 1, 2. 1 MESSIAH! at thy glad approach

The howling winds are still;
Thy praises fill the lonely waste,
And breathe from every hill.

2 Sweet as the breeze on Carmel's brow,
The waste shall yield perfume;
There cedars rise, the lilies spring,
And Sharon's roses bloom.

3 Renew'd, the earth a robe of light-
A robe of glory wears:

And in new heavens a brighter sun
Leads on the promis'd years.

4 Fear ye no more; behold your God!
Then bid your fears to cease.
His Church is with salvation blest,
And plenty dwells with peace.

HYMN 100.

The miracles of Christ foretold. Isai. xxxv. 5, 6.

xviii. 12--23.

1 THE deaf, the dumb, the blind, the lame,
The Saviour's mission all proclaim.

Heal'd by his gracious word, they prove
The mighty power of saving love.

Luke

2 Lift up the everlasting gates, The doors wide open fling: Enter, ye nations, that obey

The statutes of our King.

3 Thou, Lord, wilt give unmingled joy;
And keep in perfect peace

All that have known Jehovah's name,
And ventur'd on his grace.

4 Trust in the Lord, for ever trust,
And banish all your fears.

Strength in the Lord Jehovah dwells,
Eternal as his years.

HYMN 97.

Christ the sure foundation. Isai. xxviii. 16.
1 THUS said the Lord of Hosts;-" Behold
Henceforth in Zion I make known,
By ancient prophecy foretold,

A tried, a precious, corner-stone; 2 A sure foundation,-that may stand

When storms descend, and tempests beat;
When structures human skill hath plann'd
Their fearful final ruin meet.”

3 Lord! Thy right hand that stone hath laid;
O make it precious in our sight!
And in thy power, and through thine aid,
May each one build thereon aright.

HYMN 98.

King Messiah a Refuge, Rock, and friend. Isai. xxxii. 1, 2.

1 HE, who on earth as man was known,
And bore our sins and pains,

Now sits on an Eternal throne,
And Lord of glory reigns!

2 His righteousness, to faith reveal'd,
Wrought out for guilty worms,
Affords a hiding-place and shield
From enemies and storms.

3 The land, thro' which his pilgrims go,
Is desolate and dry;

From Him the streams of blessing flow
Their thirst to satisfy.

4 Should persecution's burning sun
Make earth a weary land,

To the great Rock they gladly run
Whose shadow is at hand.

5 How glorious He! how happy they
With Him their mighty friend!
Whose love secures them all the way,
And crowns them at the end.

2 Th' obstructed paths of sound he clears,
New music charms the opening ears;
He takes the darksome films away,
The blind behold the cheering ray.
3 He bids the helpless cripple rise,
And with new strength his limbs supplies;
He quits his couch with joyful bound,
And runs to spread the tidings round.
4 The dumb their loosen'd tongues employ
In strains of harmony and joy;

And strive, in songs of grateful praise,
Their mighty Healer's name to raise.
HYMN 101.

The pilgrim's song. Isai. xxxv. 8---10. Rev. v. 9.—vij. 17.-xxi. 4.

1 SING, ye redeemed of the Lord,
Your great Deliv'rer sing;
Pilgrims, for Zion's city bound,
Be joyful in your King!

2 See the fair way his hand hath made;
How peaceful and how plain!
The simplest trav'ller shall not err,
Nor seek the road in vain.

3 No ravening lion shall destroy,
Nor lurking serpent wound;
Safety, support, and heavenly joy,
Through all the way are found.

4 A hand divine shall lead us on
Along the blissful road;

Till to the sacred mount we rise,
And city of our God.

5 There garlands of immortal joy,
Shall bloom on every head;

While pain, and sorrow, and distress,
Like shadows all are fled.

Hezekiah's song after recovery from sickness. Isat. xxxvili.

1 PAINS of the flesh our minds abuse

With these distrustful fears;

Our days are past, and we shall lose
The remnant of our years.

2 Though like the dove we mourn, the Lord
Our cause can undertake.
'Tis His to speak the healing word,
And all our bonds to break.

3 'Tis His-to close the gates of death,
And from the grave restore,

Quicken our souls, prolong our breath,
And count our sins no more.

4 The grave can utter forth no praise;
But let our living tongue

To a kind God thanksgivings raise,
And make his love our song.

HYMN 103.

Christ's coming announced. Isai. xl. 3-5. Mal. iii. 1. Matt. iii. 3.

1 HARK! in the wilderness a cry!

It shakes the mountains, rends the earth. The King appears, behold him nigh!

The God by nature, man by birth!

2 The paths before his feet make straight,
And every obstacle remove:
Bow down, ye hills, your lofty height,
Do homage to redeeming love.

3 Then shall the lowly valley rise,

Its budding honours spring to view;
Swift the creating mandate flies,
And all is blissful, all is new.

4 Redeemer, now the word fulfil;

Thy glory to our souls make known;
Transform us to obey thy will,

And Thee, our Lord and Saviour, own.
