2 Sent to prepare Jehovah's ways,
The herald went before his face;
The temple sudden light illumes;
Lo!" the Desire of Nations" comes!
"The Angel of the Cov'nant' speaks!
New light upon the nations breaks.

3 And was that house with glory fill'd?
Yet one more glorious He shall build.
The counsel of eternal peace

Bids that the legal victims cease.
Cut off for sins, but not his own,
Lord of the temple-Christ is known.

4 Priest on His Throne,-now Jesus reigns; The glory bears,-his power maintains. The temple's ruins still proclaim

Redemption sure through Jesu's name,
Pardon vouchsaf'd,-salvation given,—
And God's whole counsel taught from heaven.

HYMN 144.

1 FATHER of mercies, in thy word
What endless glory shines?

For ever be thy name ador'd,
For these celestial lines.

2 Here springs of consolation rise,
To cheer the fainting mind;
And thirsty souls receive supplies,
And sweet refreshment find.

3 Here the Redeemer's welcome voice
Spreads heav'nly peace around;
And life, and everlasting joys
Attend the blissful sound.

4 O may these heav'nly pages be
My ever dear delight,
And still new beauties may
And still increasing light.
Ll

I see,

5 Divine instructor, gracious LORD!
Be thou for ever near;

Teach me to love thy sacred word,
And view my Saviour there.

HYMN 145.

1 THE Spirit breathes upon the word,
And brings the truth to sight;
Precepts and promises afford
A sanctifying light.

2 A glory gilds the sacred page,
Majestic like the sun;

It gives a light to ev'ry age,
It gives, but borrows none.

The hand that gave it, still supplies
The gracious light and heat;
His truths upon the nations rise;
They rise, but never set.

4 Let everlasting thanks be thine!
For such a bright display,
As makes a world of darkness shine
With beams of heav'nly day.

5 My soul rejoices to pursue
The steps of him I love,
Till glory breaks upon my view
In brighter worlds above.

HYMN 146.

SAY not, the law divine

Is from the earth remov'd;

That law within would brightly shine,

If it were sought and lov'd.

2

Ask not, who soars on high

To bring it down to earth?

Search not the depths His word to spy,

But learn its place and worth.

5

It dwelleth nigh to thee;

Thy mouth, thy heart within;
Could thy faith's eye its presence see,
Thou would'st its blessings win.

The word of faith is known;

Thy Saviour Lord receive;

Him dying as thy Saviour own,
In him as ris'n believe.

So let thy mouth proclaim,

The faith that warms thy heart;
And He, to them that know his name,
Salvation will impart.

HYMN 147.

1 READ not God's book in any case,
But with a single eye;

Read not, but first desire God's grace
To understand thereby.

2 Pray still in faith, with this respect,
To fructify therein;

That knowledge may have this effect
To mortify thy sin.

3 There is the spring where waters flow,
To quench the fire of sin;
There is the tree where truth doth grow,
To lead our lives therein.

4 The tidings of salvation dear

Come to our ears from thence;
The fortress of our faith is there,
And shield of our defence.

HYMN 148.

1 HOW happy are our ears,
That hear this joyful sound;
Which kings and prophets waited for,
And sought, but never found!

2

How blessed are our eyes,

That see this heavenly light!

Prophets and kings desir'd it long,
But died without the sight.

[blocks in formation]

1 SALVATION! O the joyful sound!
What pleasure to our ears!

A sov'reign balm for ev'ry wound,
A cordial for our fears.

Chorus.-Glory, honour, praise, and power,
Be unto the Lamb for ever!
Jesus Christ is our Redeemer:
Hallelujah! praise the Lord!

2 Buried in sorrow and in sin,
In death's dark gloom we lay;
But we arise by grace divine,
And see a heavenly day.

3 Salvation! let the echo fly

The spacious earth around,
While all the armies of the sky
Conspire to raise the sound.

4 Salvation! O thou bleeding Lamb!
To thee the praise belongs:
Salvation shall inspire our hearts,
And dwell upon our tongues.

Chorus.*-Glory, &c.

*N.B. The Hymn may be sung, as circumstances may require, without the Chorus; or with the Chorus added to every verse, or to the last only, as a full Chorus.

The Baptist.]

HYMN 150.

I WHAT glories round the Baptist shine!
given;
None such to Kings are
Less had the prophets, though divine,
And taught the will of heaven.
2 John was a fair, a shining star,
That deck'd the morning sky;
That presag'd the resplendent car
Of the Messiah nigh.

3 He came, commission'd to prepare
The path before His face;

To smooth the path, its bliss display,
The living path of grace.

4 Now, through the Stewards of thy word,
Be souls to Thee inclin'd!
Many be turn'd from sin, O Lord,
Who may thy mercy find!

HYMN 151.

261

1 HEAR, O ye saints, the words
That from the Baptist flow'd;
With wond'ring minds, and grateful hearts,
"Behold the Lamb of God!"-

2 The sacrifice for sin ordain'd,

Before earth's pillars stood,

Or seas, or skies, or stars were made,
"Behold the Lamb of God!"-

3 The Antitype of ancient rites,

When goat's and bullock's blood
Was offer'd to atone for sin,

"Behold the Lamb of God!"-
4 Great theme of sacred prophecy,
Which pointed out the road
That leads to bliss beyond the sky,
"Behold the Lamb of God!".
5 Source of all comfort to the soul,
Oppress'd with sin's great loud,
Our joy in sorrow, life in death,
"Behold the Lamb of God!!
