1 LIGHT of those whose dreary dwelling Borders on the shades of death!

Rise on us, Thyself revealing,

Rise and chase the clouds beneath.

2 The new heaven and earth's Creator!
In our deepest darkness rise;
Scattering all the night of nature,
Pour the day upon our eyes.

3 Still we wait for thine appearing;
Life and joy thy beams impart;
Chasing all our fears, and cheering
Every meek and contrite heart.
HYMN 142.

1 WHAT are those soul-reviving strains,
Which echo thus from Salem's plains?
What anthems loud, and louder still,
Sweetly resound from Zion's hill?

2 Lo! 'tis an infant chorus sings,
Hosanna to the King of Kings:

The Saviour comes! and babes proclaim
Salvation, sent in Jesu's Name.

3 Nor these alone their voice shall raise,
For we will join this song of praise;
Messiah's Name shall joy impart
Alike to Jew and Gentile heart.

4 Proclaim Hosannas loud and clear;
See David's Son and Lord appear!
Glory and praise on earth be given;
Hosanna in the highest heaven!

HYMN 143.

I NOW let our faith with joy behold
The days by prophets long foretold.
The destin❜d seventy weeks are o'er;
The sacred temple stands no more.
God shook the kingdoms of the earth,
Then gave the Prince Messiah birth.

2 Sent to prepare Jehovah's ways,
The herald went before his face;
The temple sudden light illumes;
Lo!" the Desire of Nations" comes!
"The Angel of the Cov'nant' speaks!
New light upon the nations breaks.
3 And was that house with glory fill'd?
Yet one more glorious He shall build.
The counsel of eternal
peace
Bids that the legal victims cease.

Cut off for sins, but not his own,
Lord of the temple-Christ is known.

4 Priest on His Throne,-now Jesus reigns;
The glory bears,-his power maintains.
The temple's ruins still proclaim
Redemption sure through Jesu's name,
Pardon vouchsaf'd,—salvation given,-
And God's whole counsel taught from heaven.

HYMN 144.

1 FATHER of mercies, in thy word
What endless glory shines?

For ever be thy name ador'd,
For these celestial lines.

2 Here springs of consolation rise,
To cheer the fainting mind;
And thirsty souls receive supplies,
And sweet refreshment find.

3 Here the Redeemer's welcome voice
Spreads heav'nly peace around;
And life, and everlasting joys
Attend the blissful sound.

4 O may these heav'nly pages be
My ever dear delight,

And still new beauties may I see,
And still increasing light.

Ll

5 Divine instructor, gracious Lord!
Be thou for ever near;

Teach me to love thy sacred word,
And view my Saviour there.

HYMN 145.

1 THE Spirit breathes upon the word,
And brings the truth to sight;
Precepts and promises afford
A sanctifying light.

2 A glory gilds the sacred page,
Majestic like the sun;

It gives a light to ev'ry age,
It gives, but borrows none.

3 The hand that gave it, still supplies
The gracious light and heat;
His truths upon the nations rise;
They rise, but never set.

4 Let everlasting thanks be thine!
For such a bright display,

As makes a world of darkness shine
With beams of heav'nly day.

5 My soul rejoices to pursue
The steps of him I love,
Till glory breaks upon my view
In brighter worlds above.

1

HYMN 146.

SAY not, the law divine

Is from the earth remov'd;

That law within would brightly shine,

If it were sought and lov’d.

2

Ask not, who soars on high

To bring it down to earth?

Search not the depths His word to spy,

But learn its place and worth.

3 It dwelleth nigh to thee;

Thy mouth, thy heart within;
Could thy faith's eye its presence see,
Thou would'st its blessings win.

4 The word of faith is known;
Thy Saviour Lord receive;
Him dying as thy Saviour own,
In him as ris'n believe.

5

So let thy mouth proclaim,

The faith that warms thy heart;
And He, to them that know his name,
Salvation will impart.

HYMN 147.

I READ not God's book in any case,
But with a single eye;

Read not, but first desire God's grace
To understand thereby.

2 Pray still in faith, with this respect,
To fructify therein;

That knowledge may have this effect
To mortify thy sin.

3 There is the spring where waters flow,
To quench the fire of sin;

There is the tree where truth doth grow,
To lead our lives therein.

4 The tidings of salvation dear

Come to our ears from thence;
The fortress of our faith is there,
And shield of our defence.

HYMN 148.

1 HOW happy are our ears,
That hear this joyful sound;

Which kings and prophets waited for,
And sought, but never found!

2

How blessed are our eyes,

That see this heavenly light!

Prophets and kings desir'd it long,

But died without the sight.

3

Give to the Father praise,

Give glory to the Son;
And to the Spirit of His grace

Be equal honour done.

HYMN 149.

1 SALVATION! O the joyful sound!
What pleasure to our ears!

A sov'reign balm for ev'ry wound,
A cordial for our fears.

Chorus.-Glory, honour, praise, and power,
Be unto the Lamb for ever!
Jesus Christ is our Redeemer:
Hallelujah! praise the Lord!

2 Buried in sorrow and in sin,
In death's dark gloom we lay;
But we arise by grace divine,
And see a heavenly day.

3 Salvation! let the echo fly

The spacious earth around,
While all the armies of the sky
Conspire to raise the sound.

4 Salvation! O thou bleeding Lamb!
To thee the praise belongs:
Salvation shall inspire our hearts,
And dwell upon our tongues.

Chorus.*-Glory, &c.

*N.B. The Hymn may be sung, as circumstances may require, without the Chorus; or with the Chorus added to every verse, or to the last only, as a full Chorus.
