4 Oh! may we keep and ponder in our mind,
God's wondrous love in saving lost mankind!
Trace we the Babe, who hath retriev'd our loss,
From the poor manger to the bitter cross;
Tread in his steps, assisted by his grace,
Till man's first heavenly state again takes place.
5 Then may we hope, th' angelic hosts among,
To join, redeem'd, a glad triumphant throng.
He that was born upon this joyful day,
Around us all his glory shall display:
Sav'd by his love, incessant we shall sing
Eternal praise to heaven's Almighty King.
HYMN 159.

1 HARK! the herald angels sing,

66

Glory to the new born King;
"Peace on earth, and mercy mild;
"God and sinners reconcil'd."

Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumphs of the skies,
With th' angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."
2 Christ, by highest beaven ador'd!
Christ, the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of a virgin's womb:
Veil'd in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate Deity!

Pleas'd as man with men t' appear,
Jesus our Immanuel here.

3 Hail, the heaven-born Prince of peace!
Hail, the Sun of righteousness!

Light and life to all he brings,
Ris'n with healing in his wings.
Mild he lays his glory by,

Born that man no more may die;
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.

4 Come, Desire of nations, come!
Fix in us thy humble home.

Rise, the woman's conqu❜ring seed;
Bruise in us the serpent's head.
Adam's likeness now efface,
Stamp thine image in its place;
Second Adam from above,
Re-instate us in thy love.
HYMN 160.

! ANGELS, from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth,
Ye, who sang creation's story,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth;
Come and worship,

Worship Christ the new-born King.

2 Shepherds, in the field abiding,

Watching o'er your flocks by night, God with man is now residing,

Yonder shines the infant-light; Come, &c.

3 Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;

Seek the great Desire of nations;
Ye have seen his natal star;

Come, &c.

4 Saints, before the altar bending,
Watching long in hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In his temple shall appear;

Come, &c.

5 Sinners, wrung with true repentance, Doom'd for guilt to endless pains,

Justice now revokes the sentence;

Mercy calls you, break your chains; Come &c.
HYMN 161.

1 COME, thou long expected Jesus!!
Born to set thy people free,
From our fears and sins release us;
Let us find our rest in Thee..

2 Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth thou art;
The desire of ev'ry nation,
Joy of ev'ry longing heart.

3 Born thy people to deliver;
Born a child, and yet a King:
Born to reign in us for ever,
Now thy gracious kingdom bring.

4 By thine own eternal Spirit,
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By thine all-sufficient merit,
Raise us to thy glorious throne.
HYMN 162.

BEHOLD, the grace appears,
The promise is fulfill'd ;

Mary the wondrous virgin bears,

And Jesus is the child.

The Lord, the highest God,
Calls him his only Son;

He bids him rule the lands abroad,
And gives him David's throne.

O'er Jacob shall he rule

With a peculiar sway;

The nations shall his grace obtain,
His kingdom ne'er decay.

"Glory to God on high,"
And heavenly peace on earth;
To angels joy,good will to man,
At our Redeemer's birth."

HYMN 168.

1 HOSANNA to the royal Son
Of David's ancient Fine;

His natures two, his person one,
Mysterious and divine.

2 Blest He that comes to wretched men
With peaceful news from heaven!
Hosannas of the highest strain

To Christ the Lord be given.

3 Let mortals ne'er refuse to take
Hosannas on their tongue,

Lest senseless stones should chide, and break
Their silence into song.

Epiphany.

During this season we are led to consider the Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles, as an earnest of the future universal conversion of the Gentiles;-Christ's entrance on his ministry, -the manifestation of his glory by miracles, &c. when he came, as the only-begotten Son of God, declaring to us the power, perfections, and mercy of the Father.

HYMN 164.

1 BRIGHT was the guiding star that led,
With mild benignant ray,
The Gentiles to the lowly shed,
Where the Redeemer lay.

2 But lo! a brighter, clearer light
Now points to his abode;

It shines through sin and sorrow's night
To guide us to our God.

3 O gladly tread the narrow path,

While light and grace are given;
Who meekly follow Christ on earth,
Shall reign with him in heaven.

HYMN 165.

I BRIGHTEST and best of the sons of the morning! Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid;

Star of the east! the horizon adorning,

Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

2 Cold on his cradle the dew-drops are shining, Low lies his bed with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore Him, in slumber reclining,

Maker, and Monarch, and Saviour of all. 3 Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion, Odours of Edom, and offerings divine, Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean, Myrrh from the forest, and gold from the mine?

4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation,

Vainly with gold would his favour secure; Richer by far is the heart's adoration,

Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

5 Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid! Star of the east, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid!

HYMN 166.

1 SONS of men! behold from far,
Hail the long-expected Star!
Jacob's Star, that gilds the night,
Guides bewilder'd nature right.
2 Mild it shines on all beneath,
Piercing through the shades of death:
Scatt'ring error's wide-spread night,
Kindling darkness into light.

3 Nations all, remote and near!
Haste to see your God appear:
Haste, for Him your hearts prepare;
Meet him manifested there.

4 There behold the day-spring rise,
Pouring light on mortal eyes:
See it chase the shades away,
Shining to the perfect day.
5 Sing, ye morning-stars, again!
God descends to dwell with men:
God in mercy leaves the sky:
Shout, ye sons of God, on high!
