1 LO! seated on a mountain's brow,
The list'ning multitudes below,
In simple majesty our Lord
Declares to men his heavenly word.

2 No pomp of knowledge, haughty mien,
Or vain parade, in him were seen;
He spake with meek and lowly grace,
And, when he spake, he spake to bless.

3 Those whom a sinful world deems great,
Luxurious, selfish, fierce, elate,

In fortune's gaudy honours dress'd;
Are not the men whom Jesus bless'd:-

4 The mourning, lowly, meek, and kind,
The peaceful, and the pure in mind;
The men for righteousness who long,
And for its sake who suffer wrong:

5 These, though with heavy woes oppress'd,
The Saviour hath pronounced bless'd;
Though diff'rent far the thoughts of men,
These are the subjects of his reign.

HYMN 177.

1 HOW sweetly flow'd the gospel's sound
From lips of gentleness and grace,
When listening thousands gather'd round,
And joy and rev'rence fill'd the place.

2 From heaven He came-of heaven He spoke,
To heaven he led his followers' way;
Dark clouds of gloomy night he broke,
Unveiling an immortal day.

3 Come wand'rers, to my Father's home,
Come, all ye weary ones, and rest!"
Yes! gracious Saviour!-we will come;-
Obey thee,-love thee, and be blest!

4 Easy Thy yoke!-when taught by Thee
To break through sin and Satan's chain:
Thy burden light!-O take from me
This load of guilt, those endless pains.

HYMN 178.

1 JESUS, and didst thou condescend
When veil'd in human clay,

To heal the sick, the lame, the blind,
And drive disease away?

2 Didst thou regard the beggar's cry,
And give the blind to see?
Jesus, thou Son of David, hear;
Have mercy, too on me!

3 And didst thou pity mortal woe,
And sight, and health restore?
Pity, O Lord, aud save my soul,
Which needs thy mercy more!

4 And didst thou save a trembling frame
When sinking in the wave?

I perish, Lord! oh save my soul!
For thou alone canst save.

HYMN 179.

I LORD, should we leave thine hallow'd feet,
To whom could we repair?
Where else such holy comforts meet,
As spring eternal there?

2 Unmingled joys 'tis thine to give,
And undecaying peace;

For thou canst teach us so to live,
That life shall never cease.

3 Thou only canst the cheering words
Of endless life supply;

Th' Anointed of the Lord of Lords!
The Son of God most High!

1 THOU art the WAY to Thee alone
From sin and death we flee;

And he, who would the Father seek,
Must seek Him, Lord, in Thee.

2 Thou art the TRUTH-Thy word alone
True wisdom can impart :

Thou only canst instruct the mind,
And purify the heart.

3 Thou art the LIFE-the rending tomb
Proclaims Thy conqu'ring arm;
And those, who put their trust in Thee,
Nor death nor hell shall harm.

4 Thou art the Way, the Truth, the Life!
Grant us to know that Way,
That Truth to keep, that Life to win,
Which lead to endless day.

HYMN 181.

1 GREAT God, my Maker and my King!
Of thee I'll speak, of thee I'll sing.
All thou hast done, and all thou dost,
Declare thee good, proclaim thee just.

2 Thine ancient thoughts, thy firm decrees,
Thy threat'nings, and thy promises,
The joys of heaven, the pains of hell,
What angels taste, what devils feel:-

·

3 Thy terrors, and thine acts of grace,
Thy threat'ning rod, thy smiling face,
Thy wounding, and thy healing word,
A world undone, a world restor'd:-

4 While these excite my fear and joy;
While these my tuneful lips employ;
Accept, O Lord, the humble song,
The tribute of a trembling tongue.

THE Lord Jehovah reigns,
His throne is built on high;
The garments He assumes
Are light and majesty;

His glories shine with beams so bright,
No mortal eye can bear the sight.

The thunders of his hand
Keep the wide world in awe;
His wrath and justice stand
To guard his holy law;

And where his love resolves to bless,
His truth confirms and seals the grace.
Through all his ancient works
Surprising wisdom shines,

Confounds the powers of hell,
And breaks their curs'd designs:
Strong is his arm, and shall fulfil
His great decrees, his sov'reign will.
And can this mighty King
Of glory condescend?

And will He write his name,—

Our Father and our Friend?

We love his name, we love his word;
Join all our powers, and praise the Lord!

Sundays before Lent.

These are called Septuagesima, Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima, as being respectively, in the nearest round numbers, 70, 60, and 50 days before Easter. The Services now assume a marked and instructive change; in order to show us our need of that Saviour whose coming and glory we have heretofore celebrated. We turn from Isaiah to the melancholy records of Genesis, which exhibit the fountain of all our misery, the fall, condemnation, and continued depravity of newlycreated man. The Epistles and Gospels remind us of dangers, difficulties, and temptations; and teach us the necessity of watchfulness and perseverance, of faith and charity.

HYMN 183.

1 PRAISE to the Lord of boundless might, With uncreated glories bright;

His presence on his throne above,

Fills heaven with light, and joy, and love. 2 The new-made world his eyes beheld In deep chaotic darkness veiled: "Let there be light!" Jehovah said; The light shone forth, the darkness fled. 3 He sees the mind; it lies beneath The shades of ignorance and death: He speaks, and gives a vivid ray, That changes midnight into day.

4 Shine, mighty God! with light divine
In our benighted bosoms shine;
And let thy glories stand reveal'd
As in the Saviour's face beheld.

HYMN 184.

1 THE heavens, and earth, and seas, declare
Thy glory, Lord, and constant care;
Proofs of thy wisdom and thy power
Are furnish'd by each passing hour.
2 But when we view the works of grace
Accomplish'd for our fallen race;
No more we ask the stars to tell
What Jesus only can reveal.

3 When, in the Gospel's fairer skies,
The Sun of Righteouness doth rise,
In Him at once our eyes behold
More than creation ever told.

4 Creation sings, in strains sublime,
God's praises through the range of time;
But mercy, truth, and holiness,
Shine brightest in Redemption's rays.
HYMN 185.

1 MY Maker and my King,
To thee my all I owe;

Thy sov'reign bounty is the spring
From whence my blessings flow.
