1 COME, Holy Ghost! our souls inspire; And lighten with celestial fire. Thou the anointing Spirit art, Who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart. 2 Thy blessed unction from above Is comfort, life, and fire of love. Enable with perpetual light
The dulness of our blinded sight. 3 Anoint and cheer our soiled face With the abundance of thy grace: Keep far our foes, give peace at home; Where Thou art Guide, no ill can come. 4 Teach us to know the Father, Son, And Thee, of both,—to be but ONE: That, thro' the ages all along,
This theme may be our endless song: Chorus. Praise be to thy eternal merit, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!
1 HOLY Ghost! whose fire celestial Light, and life divine, imparts; Come, and dwell in hearts terrestrial, Heaven reveal in earthly hearts. 2 Come, and pour in blest effusion Heavenly unction from above; Scatt'ring wide, in rich diffusion, Comfort, light, and fire of love. 3 Keep thy Church in holy union;
Foes remove, give peace at home. Source of peace, and sweet communion! Where thou dwell'st no ill can come.
4 Teach us humbly to adore thee, While on earth we pass our days; Thence transport our souls to glory, Lost in wonder, love, and praise.
1 CREATOR Spirit! by whose aid The world's foundations first were laid, Come, visit ev'ry pious mind;
Come, pour thy joys on human kind; From sin and sorrow set us free, And make us temples worthy Thee. 2 Thrice Holy Fount; Thrice Holy Fire! Our hearts with heavenly love inspire; Come, and thy sacred unction bring, To sanctify us while we sing.
Plenteous of grace, descend from high, Rich in thy seven-fold energy!
3 Thou strength of His almighty hand, Whose power does heaven and earth command; Our frailties help, our vice control,
Subdue the senses to the soul;
And, lest our feet should go astray, Protect and guide us in the way.
4 Chase from our minds th' infernal foe, And peace, the fruit of love, bestow: Make us eternal truth receive, And practise all that we believe: Give us Thyself, that we may see The Father, and the Son, by Thee.
1 COME, Holy Spirit! Heav'nly Dove! With all thy quick'ning powers; Kindle a flame of sacred love
In these cold hearts of ours.
2 See how we grovel here below, Fond of these earthly toys! Our souls, how heavily they go To reach eternal joys.
3 Come, Holy Spirit! Heav'nly Dove! With all thy quick'ning powers! Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love, And that shall kindle ours.
1 COME, HOLY SPIRIT! Come, Let thy bright beams arise; Dispel the sorrow from our minds, The darkness from our eyes.
2 Revive our drooping faith,
Our doubts and fears remove; And kindle in our hearts the flame Of never-dying love.
3 Convince us of our sin,
And lead to JESU's blood. And to the eye of faith reveal The pard'ning love of GoD. 4 'Tis thine to cleanse the heart, To sanctify the soul,
To pour fresh life on ev'ry part, And new create the whole.
5 Dwell therefore in our hearts,
Our minds from bondage free; Then shall we know, and praise, and love, The Father, Son, and Thee.
1 COME, gracious Spirit! from above, With light and comfort, power and love; Be Thou our guardian, Thou our guide, O'er every thought and step preside. 2 The light of truth O still display, That we may know and choose thy way; The fear of God to us impart
That we from Him may ne'er depart. 3 Lead us to Christ, the living' way, Nor let us from his pastures stray; Lead us to God, our final rest, In his enjoyment to be bless'd. 4 Lead us to holiness, the road
That we must take, to dwell with God; Lead us to heaven, his seat of bliss, Where pleasure in perfection is.
1 WHEN saints have manfully maintain'd The warfare of the Lord,
Finish'd their course, and kept the faith, How sure is their reward!
2 God hath laid up for them in heav'n A crown that cannot fade;
The righteous judge at that great day Shall place it on their head.
3 Nor has the King of Grace decreed This prize for some alone,
But all that love and long to see Th' appearance of the Son.
4 O may the Lord preserve me safe From every ill design,
And to his heavenly kingdom keep This feeble soul of mine. HYMN 239.
1 NOR eye hath seen, nor ear hath heard, Nor sense nor reason known, What joys the Father hath prepar'd For those that love the Son. 2 But the good Spirit of the Lord Reveals a heaven to come; The beams of glory in his word Allure and guide us home.
3 Unknown the joy that God supplies To christians here below;
Unknown their joy beyond the skies When they to glory go.
4 Impart to us those blessings, Lord, By thee so freely given;
And may thy Spirit and thy word Prepare our souls for heaven.
1 WHEN we can view our title clear, Through Jesus, to the skies,
We bid farewell to ev'ry fear, And dry our weeping eyes.
2 Should death against our souls engage; Should fiery darts be hurl'd;
We smile at death, and Satan's rage, And face a frowning world.
3 Should cares, like wildest billows, come, And storms of sorrow fall;
May we but safely reach our home, Our God! our heaven! our All!
4 Then shall we bathe our weary souls On seas of heavenly rest; Where not a wave of trouble rolls Across the peaceful breast.
On Ascension day, 40 days after Easter, and the following Sunday, we commemorate our Saviour's exaltation, as our High Priest and King; as our Intercessor, and Forerunner; and while we hope to follow him to heaven, we pray for the Holy Spirit's presence, as our Comforter and Guide on earth.
1 HAIL! the day that saw Him rise Glorious to His native skies! Christ, awhile to mortals given, Enters now the highest heaven.
2 Lo! the heaven its Lord receives! Yet he loves the earth He leaves. Though returning to his throne, Still He calls mankind his own. 3 Still for us He intercedes; His prevailing death He pleads: Near Himself prepares our place, Harbinger of human race.
4 Oh! though parted from our sight, Far above yon azure height,
Grant our hearts may thither rise, Seeking Thee above the skies!
