3 Th' eternal shepherd still survives, On whom their faith reposed; Follow the faith their lips proclaim'd, Now that those lips are clos'd.
4 JESUS eternal shepherd lives, To guide, defend, and cheer; To-day, and yesterday, the same, HE ever will be near.
5 Through every scene of life and death, His promise is our trust; And he shall be our children's song, When we are cold in dust.
1 BEREAV'D, O Lord, to thee we cry, And seek the guidance of thine eye. May we our recent loss no more, As sheep without a guide, deplore. 2 O Lord! in ways of peace return, Nor let thy flock neglected mourn; Soon may our eyes a shepherd see Belov'd by us, belov'd by Thee. 3 To all thy Churches, Lord, impart, "Pastors according to thine heart;" Whose courage, faithfulness, and love, Men shall attest, and God approve. 4 Fed by their care, thy flock shall show, That they in grace and knowledge grow Confirm the hopes thy mercies raise, And give us cause for grateful praise.
1 WE bid thee welcome in the name Of Jesus, our exalted Head;Come as a Servant, so HE came,
And we receive thee in His stead.
2 Come as a Shepherd; watch, and keep This fold from error, and from sin; Nourish the lambs, and feed the sheep; The wounded heal, the lost bring in.
3 Come as a Teacher, sent by God,
Charg'd his whole counsel to declare; Lift o'er our ranks the prophet's rod, While we uphold thy hand with prayer. 4 Come as a Messenger of peace,
Fill'd with the Spirit, fir'd with love; Live to behold our large increase,
And, dying, meet us all above.
1 BLESS'D day of God! how calm, how bright; A day of joy and praise;
The lab'rer's rest,—the saint's delight,- The first and best of days.
2 This day the Lord our Saviour rose Victorious from the dead, And, as a conqueror, his foes In glorious triumph led.
3 This day believers doth enrich, Grace rests upon them all; It is their Pentecost, on which The Holy Ghost doth fall.
4 'Tis the fair dawn of bliss above; The weary soul's recruit;
The Christian's Goshen, pledge of love,- A tree of living fruit.
5 This day we must for God appear, For, Lord, the day is thine;
O may we spend it in thy fear, And in thy beauties shine!
6 As the first fruits an earnest prove Of all the sheaves behind,
So they who do the Sabbath love, A happy week shall find:
1 AGAIN the day returns of holy rest,
Which, when he made the world, Jehovah blest; When, like his own, He bade our labours cease, And all be piety, and all be peace.
2 Let us devote this consecrated day, To learn his will, and all we learn obey; In pure religion's hallow'd duties share, And join in penitence, and join in prayer. 3 So shall the God of mercy pleas'd receive That only tribute man hath power to give; So shall He hear, while fervently we raise Our choral harmony in hymns of praise.
4 Father of heaven! in whom our hopes confide, Whose power defends us, and whose precepts guide,
In life our Guardian, and in death our Friend, Glory supreme be thine till time shall end.
10 THOU dayspring, bright and glorious, Shining once on Judah's land! Let the light of truth victorious Over nature's night expand.
Let thy beams break forth with healing, Let salvation swiftly fly,
Light and joy to those revealing
Who in death's dark shadows lie.
2 From on high in mercy springing, Visit us, thou light divine! Life and health and beauty bringing, Rise upon our souls and shine. O thro' life our path enlighten,
Guide our feet in ways of peace; Thro' death's vale our prospect brighten, Light our way to realms of bliss.
10 MAY we please our God to-day! May that be all our care!
Give, Lord, thy grace, lest evil thoughts Should mingle in our prayer,
2 Amidst th' assembly of thy saints May we be faithful found;
And may we join the humble prayer, And in thy praise abound.
3 Let Thy good Spirit help our souls With faith thy word to hear; Be with us in thy temple, Lord! And let us find Theé near.
1 GOD is a Spirit, just and wise; He sees our inmost mind;
In vain to heaven we raise our cries, And leave our souls behind.
2 In spirit and in truth alone
We must present our prayer; The formal and the false are known Through the disguise they wear. 3 Their lifted eyes salute the skies, Their bended knees the ground; But God abhors the sacrifice, Where not the heart is found.
1 NOT here, as to the prophet's eye, The Lord upon his throne appears; Nor seraph-tongues responsive cry, Holy! Thrice Holy! in our ears:- 2 Yet God is present in this place, Veil'd in serener majesty; So full of glory, truth, and grace, That Faith alone such light can see.
3 Nor, as He in the temple taught,
Is Christ within these walls reveal'd; When blind, and deaf, and dumb were brought, Lepers and lame, and all were heal'd;-
4 Yet here, where two or three shall meet, Or thronging multitudes are found, All may sit down at Jesus' feet,
And hear from Him the joyful sound. HYMN 297.
1 SOON shall the evening star, with silver ray, Shed its mild lustre on this sacred day; Resume we then, ere sleep and silence reign, The rites that holiness and heaven ordain. 2 Still let each awful truth our thoughts engage, That shines reveal'd on inspiration's page; Nor those blest hours in vain amusement waste, Which all who lavish shall lament at last. 3 Here let us humbly hope our Maker's smile Will crown with meet success our weekly toil; And here, on each returning Sabbath, join In prayer, in penitence, and praise divine. 4 Father of heaven in whom our hopes confide! Whose power defends us, and whose precepts guide, In life our Guardian, and in death our Friend, Glory supreme be thine till time shall end.
1 IS there a time when moments flow More peacefully than all beside P It is of all the times below,
A sabbath eve in summer's tide.
2 Oh! then the setting sun smiles fair; And all below and all above,
The diff'rent forms of nature, wear One universal garb of love.
