4 Yet, midst thy wrath, remember love, And hear the humble suff'rers mourn Their prayers receive, their fears remove, And let thine anger cease to burn!

HYMN 335.

1 LORD! look on all assembled here, Who in thy presence stand

To offer up united prayer

For this our sinful land.

2 O may we all, with one consent,
Fall low before thy throne;
With tears the nation's sins lament,
The Church's, and our own.
3 Great God of Hosts! deliv'rance bring;
Guide those that hold the helm;
Support the State, preserve the King,
And spare the guilty realm.

4 Or, should the dread decree be past,
And we must feel the rod,

Let faith and patience hold us fast
To our correcting God!

5 Whatever be our destin'd case,
Accept us in thy Son;

Give us his Gospel and his grace,
And then,-Thy will be done!

HYMN 336.

1 DREAD Jehovah! God of nations!
From thy temple in the skies,
Hear thy people's supplications,
Now for their deliv'rance rise.
Lo! with deep contrition turning,
Humbly at thy feet we bend,
Fasting, praying, weeping, mourning;.
Hear us, spare us, and defend!

2 Though our sins, our hearts confounding,
Long and loud for vengeance call,
Thou hast mercy more abounding;
Jesus' blood can cleanse them all.
Let that mercy veil transgression,
Let that blood our guilt efface;
Save thy people from oppression,
Save from spoil thy holy place.

3 Hear, O God, the vows we render;
With our hosts to battle go;
Shield the head of each defender,
And confound the haughty foe.
So, when ceas'd the battle's raging,
Thine shall be the victor's praise:
And, in holy bonds engaging,

We will serve Thee all our days.

HYMN 337.

1 LORD of heaven and earth and ocean!
Hear us from thy bright abode,
While our hearts, with deep devotion,
Own their great and gracious God.
Now, with joy we come before thee,
Seek thy face-thy mercies sing:
Lord of life and light and glory!
Guard thy church, and save our king.

2 Health and every needful blessing
Are thy bounteous gifts alone;
Comforts undeserv'd possessing,
Here we bend before thy throne:
While the babe, the youth, the hoary,
Their united tribute bring,
Lord of life and light and glory!
Shield our isle, and save our king.

3 Thee, with humble adoration,

Lord, we praise for mercies past; Still, to this most favour'd nation May those mercies ever last:

Britons, then, through future story,
Songs of ceaseless praise shall sing:
Lord of life and light and glory!
Bless thy people-bless our king.

HYMN 338.

1 BLESS'D is the man whose heart expands At melting pity's call,

And the rich blessings of whose hands
Like heavenly manna fall.

2 Children our kind protection claim,
And Jesus will approve,

When infants learn to lisp his name,
And their Creator love.

3 Delightful work! young souls to win,
And turn the rising race
From the deceitful paths of sin,
To seek redeeming grace.

4 Be ours the bliss in wisdom's way
To guide untutor'd youth,

And show the mind, that went astray,
The way, the life, the truth.

5 Almighty God! thy influence shed
To aid this good design:

The honours of thy name be spread,
And all the glory thine.

HYMN 339.

1 OUR soul shall magnify the Lord, In him our spirit shall rejoice; Assembled here with one accord,

Our hearts shall praise Him with our voice.

2 God of our hope, to Thee we bow,
Thou art our refuge in distress;
The Husband of the widow Thou,
The Father of the fatherless.

3 May we thy law of love fulfil,

To bear each other's burdens here; Suffer and do thy righteous will,

And walk in all thy faith and fear. 4 Didst Thou not give thy Son to die For our transgressions, in our stead? And can thy goodness aught deny

To those for whom thy Son hath bled? 5 Then may our union, here begun, Endure for ever, firm and free; At thy right hand may we be one, One with each other, and with Thee.

HYMN 340.

1 HIGH on a throne of radiant light Thou, Christ! dost brightly shine! What can our poverty bestow,

When all the worlds are thine?

2 Yet hast thou brethren here below,
Partakers of thy grace;

Thou wilt confess their humble names
Before thy Father's face.

3 In them thou may'st be cloth'd and fed,
And visited, and cheer'd;
And, in their accents of distress,
The Saviour's voice is heard.

4 Teach us, in faith and love sincere,
Thee in thy poor to see;

Teach us to know thy boundless love,
And make us like to Thee.

HYMN 341.

1 FATHER of mercies! send the grace
All-powerful, from above,

To form in our obedient souls
The image of thy love.

20 may our sympathizing hearts
That gen'rous pleasure know,
Kindly to share in others' joy,
And weep for others' woe.
3 If accident, or sore disease,
The sons of grief invade,
Soft be our hearts their woes to feel,
And swift our hands to aid!

4 To scenes of woe, to beds of pain,
Dispose us to repair;

And, with the gifts thy hand bestows,
To soothe the mourners there.

5 So Jesus look'd on dying man,
And left the realms above!
SAVIOUR! imprint on all our souls
The image of thy love.

HYMN 342.

1 WHEN, like a stranger on our sphere,
The lowly Jesus wander'd here,
Where'er He went affliction fled,
And sickness rear'd her fainting head.
2 The eye, that roll'd in irksome night,
Beheld his face,-for God is light;
The opening ear, the loosen'd tongue,
His praises heard, his praises sung.
3 Through paths of loving-kindness led,
Where Jesus triumph'd, we will tread;
To all, with willing hands, dispense T
The crumbs of our benevolence,
A

4 Hark! the sweet voice of pity callo
Misfortune to yon hallow'd walls,

[graphic]

The breaking heart,-the wounded breast-
And helpless poverty distrest.

5 O Thou, dread Power! whose sovereign, breath
Is health or sickness, life or death,
That house of mercy deign to bless;
The cause is Thine! O send success!
