PSALM 82.

Prayer and warning for magistrates.---See 2 Chron. xix. 6, 7.

1 OUR God among the mighty stands :
There his impartial eye

Will judge the deeds of earthly gods,
And their decisions try.
2 O dare not then unjustly judge;
Nor for the wicked plead.
Defend the orphan and the poor;
And succour those in need,

3 Gods ye are nam'd; earth's tribes in you
Children of God behold:

But ye are mortal; and shall die,
And mix with kindred mould.

4 Arise, O God, and judge the earth;
Thy righteousness display:
The world is thine inheritance,
The world shall own thy sway.

PSALM 83.

As, while there is a Church, she will have her enemies, this Psalm will never be out of date; and the individual christian may at all times apply it to his spiritual adversaries.

1 HOLD not thy peace, O Lord our God;
No longer silent stand:

Lo, threat'ning foes uplift the head,
And agitate the land.

2 Against thy faithful people, Lord,
They craftily combine;

And to destroy thy hidden ones
Are leagued in close design.

3 Shew them their madness, work their shame, That they may own thy name.

Confound them, if their harden'd hearts
All gentler means disclaim.

4 Then shall the wond'ring world confess
That Thou, who claim'st alone
JEHOVAH'S name, o'er all the earth
Hast rais'd thy sov'reign throne.

PSALM 84.

Longing for the house and presence of God; and the blessedness of those who enjoy it.

1 O GOD of hosts, the mighty Lord,
How lovely is the place,

Where thou, enthron'd in glory, show'st
The brightness of thy face!

2 My longing soul faints with desire
To view thy blest abode;

My panting heart and flesh cry out
For thee the living God.

3 Thrice happy they, whose choice has Thee
Their sure protection made!

Who long to tread the sacred ways
That to thy dwelling lead.

4 They shall proceed from strength to strength, And still approach more near;

Till all on Zion's holy mount
Before their God appear.

The same subject; with an act of faith in God's power and

goodness.

5 O LORD of hosts, my King and God,.
How highly blest are they,
Who in thy temple always dwell,
And there thy praise display!

6 To spend a day within thy courts,
Or at thy gate attend,-

Is better than elsewhere, O Lord,
A thousand days to spend.

7 For God, who is our sun and shield,
Will grace and glory give;

And no good thing will he withhold
From them that purely live.

8 O God, whom heav'nly hosts obey,
How highly blest is he,

Who in thy strength alone confides,
And simply trusts in THEE!

VERSION II.

1 LORD of the worlds above,
How pleasant and how fair,
These temples of thy love,
Thine earthly dwellings are!

To thine abode
With warm desires

2

My heart aspires,
To see my God.

O happy souls that pray

Where God appoints to hear!

O happy men that pay

Their constant service there!

Tread in God's strength This vale of tears,

Till each appears

In heav'n at length.

3 To spend one sacred day

Where God and saints abide,

Affords diviner joy

Than thousand days beside;

God will bestow

Peculiar grace,

On Jacob's race

And glory too.

4 The Lord his people loves,
His hand no good withholds
From those his heart approves,
Whom upright he beholds.

Thrice happy he,

Whose spirit trusts

O Lord of Hosts,

Alone in Thee.
