The redemption of Israel of old pleaded by the Church, in prayer for redemption from sin.
1 THE Lord of old display'd his grace, In Israel's favour'd land; And captive Jacob's rescued race Confess'd his saving hand.
2 Thou didst forgive thine heritage, And all their sins efface; The fury of thy wrath assuage; And all thine anger chase.
3 Turn us, O God, our Saviour,-turn; No thought of wrath retain.
For ever shall thine anger burn ?— Revive us yet again.
4 Oh be thy people's joy restor❜d! To us thy mercy show; And thy salvation, long implor'd, On us, O Lord, bestow.
The blessings of the great redemption by Messiah. 5 WE wait Jehovah's will to hear;
His promise whispers peace; Salvation to his saints is near, If they from folly cease.
6 On those that fear him, brightly shown, His saving light attends;
His Glory, from th' eternal throne, To dwell with men descends.
7 Prevailing Mercy, Truth unchang'd, In kind communion meet:
Justice and Peace, no more estrang'd, With mutual kisses greet.
8 Truth from the earth is seen to rise, And wide her branches throw; And Justice from her native skies Looks down on man below.
9 The Lord bestows his saving grace, On this our favour'd land: May we his righteous footsteps trace, Led by his guiding hand.
PSALM 86.
An earnest supplication.
1 HEAR me, O God; preserve my soul, For I thy Name adore; Thy servant save, who trusts in thee; And graciously restore.
2 Daily I supplicate thy grace; Thy mercy show to me; And cause thy servant to rejoice Who lifts his soul to thee.
3 Thou, Lord, art good; nor only good, But prompt to pardon too; Plenteous in mercy to all those, That for thy mercy sue.
4 To my repeated humble prayer, O Lord, attentive be; When troubles rise, on thee I'll call, For thou wilt answer me.
An act of faith, hope, and prayer.
5 AMONG the Gods, who, Lord, can boast A name like Thine divine? Neither their nature, nor their works, Can be compar'd with Thine.
6 The nations thou hast made shall own The works that thou hast done;
Shall own Thee LORD, Thee God supreme, Confess Thee God alone.
7 Teach me thy holy way, O Lord, To Thee unite my heart;
Then shall I fear thy glorious name, Nor from thy truth depart.
8 Thee will I praise; but all thy grace Transcends my power to tell. Boundless thy patience, mercy, truth, That rescue me from hell.
"Salvation is of the Jews;" but the Gentiles are fellow heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ by the Gospel." John iv. 22.---Eph. ii. & iii.
1 GOD'S temple crowns the holy mount; The Lord in Zion deigns to dwell: Her favour'd gates, in his account, His Israel's fairest tents excel. Fame glorious things of thee shall sing, Thou city of the heavenly King.
2 Egypt and Babylon shall join
The house of them that know the Lord; Philistia and Tyre combine
With Seba to receive his word. Each Gentile of the peopled earth From Zion claims his happy birth. 3 Aliens no more, within her seat
Joyous they gain a blest abode; Behold the countless myriads meet
As Zion's Sons, and heirs of God. From Zion will each saint on earth- From Zion claim his happy birth.
4 God will his Zion's state uphold:
And when his saints he shall declare, Of each this truth shall then be told-
This man did Israel's birthright share.' Let then each joyful Psalmist sing- Zion, of grace th' unfailing spring. PSALM 88.
The pleadings of Messiah in his sufferings, to him that was able to save him from death.---Appointed for Good Friday.
1 GOD of my health; to thee by day, To thee by night I ceaseless pray: Lord, to my cry incline thine ear; My troubled soul to death draws near. 2 They number me among the dead, Like those whose strength and hopes are fled. Heavy thy wrath on me has lain; A grievous burden I sustain.
3 Yet daily, Lerd, to thee I've pray'd; With outstretch'd hand invok'd thy aid. Wilt thou the dead restore, and bring Them from the grave, thy praise to sing? 4 Shall the still grave thy love confess? The mould'ring tomb thy faithfulness? Thy truth and pow'r renown obtain Where darkness and oblivion reign? 5 To thee, O Lord, I cry forlorn, My pray'r prevents the early morn. Why hast thou yet my soul repell'd; Thy gracious presence thus withheld? PSALM 89.
Praise for God's mercy in Christ, the Son of David. 1 THY mercies, Lord, shall be my song; My lips on them shall ever dwell.
To ages yet unborn my tongue Thy neverfailing truth shall tell.
2 Thou spakest by the prophet's voice, "With David I've my cov'nant made; "To him, the servant of my choice
By solemn oath this boon convey'd.
3 "While earth and seas and skies endure, Thy seed shall in my sight remain;
"To them thy throne will I ensure,
They shall to endless ages reign."
4 For such stupendous truth and love, Both heav'n and earth their praises owe; By choirs of angels sung above,
And thy assembled saints below.
Jehovah claims the praise of his creatures because of his works, dispensations, and perfections.
5 WHAT Seraph, of celestial birth, To vie with Israel's God shall dare? Or who among the Gods of earth
With our Almighty LORD compare? 6 Assembled saints, revere this name With solemn awe, and holy fear; Who strength can like JEHOVAH claim? What faithfulness like His appear?
7 Thou dost the lawless sea control, And rule the raging of the deep; Thou mak'st the sleeping billows roll, Thou mak'st the rolling billows sleep. 8 In Thee the sov'reign right remains
Of earth and heav'n; Thee, Lord, alone The world, and all that it contains,
Their Maker and Preserver own. 9 Earth's poles in their position rest, First fix'd by thy creating voice; Tabor and Hermon, east and west, In thy sustaining power rejoice.
