10 Thy arm is mighty; strong thy hand; Thou dost a righteous sceptre bear; Thine is unlimited command;

Mercy and truth thy way prepare.

The happiness and security of those who believe and trust the
Lord.

11 BLEST are the souls that hear and know
The Gospel's joyful sound;
Peace shall attend the path they go,
And light their steps surround.

12 Their joy shall bear their spirits up,
Thro' their Redeemer's name;
His righteousness exalts their hope,
Nor Satan dares condemn.

13 The LORD, our glory and defence,
Strength and salvation gives;
Israel, thy King for ever reigns,
Thy God for ever lives.

VERSION II.

1 FOR ever shall my song record
The truth and mercy of the Lord:
Mercy and truth for ever stand,
Like heav'n, establish'd by his hand.
2 Thus to his Son he sware, and said,
"With thee my cov'nant first was made,
"In thee shall dying sinners live,

66

Glory and grace are thine to give.

3 “In thee, their Prophet and their Priest, Thy children shall be ever blest;

[ocr errors]

"Thou art my chosen King: thy throne
"Shall stand eternal like my own."

4 Now let the church rejoice, and sing
Jesus her Saviour and her King;
Angels his heav'nly wonders show,
And saints declare his works below.

PSALM 90.

"A prayer of Moses the man of God;" probably written when God shortened the days of the murmuring Israelites. Num. xiv. God's eternity, and man's mortality.

1 O GOD, the Saviour and defence
Of all thy chosen race,

From age to age thou still hast been
Our sure abiding place.

2 Before the hills in order stood
Or earth receiv'd her frame,
From everlasting thou wast GOD,
And ever art the same.

3 Thou turnest man, O Lord, to dust,
Of which he first was made:

The word," Return ye sons of men,"
Is instantly obey'd.

4 For in thy sight a thousand years
Are but as yesterday;

Like the last watch of ending night

Our fleeting years decay.

Man's frailty under divine chastisement for sin. 5 TIME'S rolling flood bears man away: We vanish like a dream.

At first we grow like springing grass
Beneath the sun's bright beam.

6 Its morning verdure, fresh and fair,
With varied beauty glows;
Made by the scythe a with'ring heap,
Before the evening close.

7 We by thy anger are consum'd,
And by thy wrath dismay'd;
Our open crimes and secret sins
Before thy sight are laid.

8 Beneath the burden of thy wrath
Our drooping days we spend;
Our unregarded years break off
Like tales that quickly end.

The short term of human life.

9 OUR term of life is seventy years,
And few that age survive!

How few, with more than common strength,
At eighty years arrive!

10 Yet what is then man's boasted strength
But sorrow, toil, and pain P

So soon we close our brief career,
And we no more remain.

11 Thy terrors, Lord, who rightly knows ?
Who thy dread wrath reveres?

Thy righteous anger, and thy power,
May justly wake our fears.

12 So teach us, Lord, th' uncertain sum
Of our short days to mind,

That to true wisdom all our hearts
May ever be inclin’d.

A prayer for future mercy to our frail nature.

[ocr errors]

13 RETURN, O Lord, at our request;
Oh! speedily return;

Be gracious to thy servants, Lord,
That we may cease to mourn.

14 To satisfy and cheer our souls
Thy early mercy send;

That all the days of future life
We in thy joy may spend.

15 0 bid at length some happier day
Our wasted spirits cheer;

O bid thy power and glory now,
And to our sons, appear.

16 Let thy bright presence round us shine; Our labours deign to bless;

prosper what we take in hand,

And crown it with success.

PSALM 91.

The security of the faithful amidst danger and temptation.

1 HE, that within the secret place
Of God Most High doth dwell,
Under the shadow of his grace
He shall be safe and well.

2 "Thou art our refuge and strong hold,"
We to the Lord will say:

He is our God; and we in Him
Our whole affiance stay.

3 He shall defend thee from the snare
By Satan's malice laid;
And from sin's noisome pestilence,
That makes thy soul afraid.

4 He shall his wing around thee spread,
Thee with its plumes to shield;
A mighty buckler o'er thy head
His faithfulness shall wield.

God's promises the security of his people in all their ways.
See Matt. iv. 6, 7.

5 O LORD, our refuge,—he that knows
Thy faithfulness and power,

Shall dwell in undisturb'd repose,
Nor fear the trying hour.

6 No midnight terror haunts his bed,
No arrow wounds by day;
Unhurt on serpents he may tread,
When found in duty's way.

7 Angels, unseen, attend the saints,
And bear them in their arms;
To cheer their spirit when it faints,
And guard their foot from harms.
8 The angels' Lord himself is nigh
To them that love his name;
Ready to save them when they cry,
And put their foes to shame.

9 Troubled, yet not cast down, they live;
For His support they know,
Who soon will his salvation give,
And endless life bestow.

PSALM 92.

A Psalm, or Song for the Sabbath day.

1 SWEET is the work, my God, my King,
To praise thy name, give thanks, and sing;
To show thy love at morning light,
And talk of all thy truth at night.
2 Sweet is the day of sacred rest;
No mortal care shall seize my breast.
Oh, may our hearts in tune be found,
Like David's harp of solemn sound.
3 Our heart shall triumph in the Lord,
And bless his works, and bless his word.
Thy works of grace, how bright they shine!
How deep thy counsels! how divine!

4 Those planted in thy courts are seen,
Like stately cedars, fresh and green.
There grow thy saints in faith and love,
Blest with thy influence from above.
5 Laden with fruits of age, they show
The Lord is holy, just, and true.
None that attend his gates shall find
A God unfaithful, or unkind.
