NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS YING QUARTET WITNESSES DAVID YING, YING QUARTET AMY BERNS, STUDENT, JESSUP, IOWA OPENING REMARKS Mr. YATES. Welcome to the hearing-it will still be called a hearing, in spite of the fact that it will be more like a performancethe hearing by the Appropriations Subcommittee for the Department of Interior and Related Agencies on the budget for fiscal year 1994. Many people are appearing in support of that budget today as outside witnesses. And among the most excellent witnesses, and the most unique for this hearing room, are the Ying Quartet, whom you see in the center of the room. I learned about the Yings about two months ago when I saw them as a part of the Charles Kurault show on a Sunday morning performing in Jessup, Iowa, a not too large metropolis a few miles north of Des Moines, I think, is it not? At any rate, they were wonderful in their performance on the Kurault show, and we're most fortunate this morning in having them with us. And to launch this very unique day of testimony we have asked the Yings to show us their talents, and they propose to play some Mozart, as I understand it. Am I correct? Which of the Mozart Mr. PHILIP YING. We will announce what we play. YING QUARTET PERFORMANCE Mr. PHILIP YING. Mr. Chairman and Congressmen, ladies and gentlemen, it gives us great pleasure to be here with you this morning to tell you about the truly exciting and rewarding year that we've had in Jessup, Iowa, as part of the National Endowment for the Arts Chamber Music Rural Residency Initiative. It took me all year to learn how to say that. [Laughter.] |
