THE DIAL

$2.00 a Year. Single copies, 10 cts.

A Semi-Monthly Journal of Literary Criticism, Discussion and Information.

"THE DIAL seems at present the most unbiased, good-humored, and sensible organ of American criticism."--BARRETT WENDELL, in "Literary History of America," 1900 (p.507). Long live THE DIAL, which chooses to draw its faithful shadow not from the earth, but from the sun "

GEORGE W. CABLE. NORTHAMPTON, MASS., April 5, 1900.

"THE DIAL has shown in all its past that dignity and conscience and kindliness may go to good criticism, without sacrifice of thoroughness or of acumen."

DONALD G MITCHELL. EDGEWOOD, April 11, 1900.

"One can really tell the time by THE DIAL: it does not confuse one by having a looking-glass face" HORACE E. Scudder. CAMBRIDGE, MASS., April 9, 1900.

"THE DIAL'S good sense, its sound critical judgment, liberal spirit, and high principles, all maintained with simplicity, steadithe cordial regard of its readers" ness, and without pretension, have secured the respect as well as CHARLES ELIOT NORTON.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY, April 21, 1900.

THE DIAL has a very definite aim and scope,
though by no means a narrow one. By con-
cerning itself, not with Books alone but with
Literature in the largest sense, following the best
models of the older countries in which the pros-
perity and standing of journals of its class are a
measure of the current civilization, it makes itself
distinctive in America. It is preeminently "A
Journal of Literary Criticism, Discussion and In-
formation." In addition to its treatment of
Books, it discusses literary movements and ten-
dencies, gives information of literary people and
events, and includes whatever pertains to liter-
ary affairs and related subjects of higher intel-
lectual concern.

"I have read THE DIAL for years, and it has always given me the impression of being in the company of refined gentlemen who are agreeably relating the literary affairs of the day." S. WEIR MITCHELL. PHILADELPHIA, March 28, 1900.

[ocr errors]

By the sanity of its literary judgments, by the catholicity of its tastes and of its opinions, and by the responsible character of its signed book reviews, THE DIAL makes a peculiarly strong appeal to men and women interested in the study of literature.'

NICHOLAS MURRAY BUTLER.
COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY,

NEW YORK, March 28, 1900.

"From no literary journal, for eign or domestic, have I derived more profit than from THE DIAL, during the twenty years of its existence."

EDMUND CLARENCE STEDMAN.
BRONXVILLE, N. Y.,

April 14, 1900.

"THE DIAL has gained the solid respect of the country as a serious and impartial journal of literary criticism, without resorting to pictures or personalities, or mistaking the back-stairs gossip about writers for literature." CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER. NORFOLK, VA., April 2, 1900.

Four Unique Works

Moses and Geology

Or The Harmony of the Bible with Science

By the Rev. SAMUEL KINNS, Ph. D., F.R.A.S., etc. Size 5x8; 518 pages, 110 illustrations; cloth, gilt, $1.00.

Each edition as issued has been thoroughly revised, and the astronomical and other facts brought up to date.

"Dr. Kinus deserves the thanks of the public for undertaking to show that the Bible, instead of being in antagonism to science, harmonizes with it in every essential particular. . . . Dr. Kinns shows complete mastership of his subject in every branch, and as his style is lucid and his method of treatment bright and pleasant, the student will not be in a hurry to put the agreeable volume down when once it is taken up. The illustrations are admirably adapted to elucidate the text."-" The Globe" (London).

"The versatile genius of the author, no less than his talent for condensation, are abundantly manifested in the separate chapters

[blocks in formation]

"Graven in the Rock,' by the Rev. Dr. Kinns, is an elaborate defence of the historical accuracy of the Bible, which the author seeks to establish upon the evidence of inscriptions on Assyrian and Egyptian monuments. Several entertaining chapters are devoted to the achievements of the great Hebrew law-giver, in the narrative of whose life and times much hieroglyphic lore has been judiciously utilized. Biographical sketches of Solomon, Sardanapalus, Ahab, Sennacherib, Belshazzar and other potentates of antiquity who may be termed the royal heroes of Biblical romance, will devoted to the fifteen chief acts of creation. To illustrate each also be found in this interesting work, which is ably and profusely event of the series by the latest light of the science naturally conillustrated throughout. The discoveries of Belzoni, Rawlinson, nected with it, requires a wide field of learning, in which not geol-Layard, and other eminent Assyrian and Egyptian explorers, are ogy only, but astronomy, botany, zoology, and many other branches also recounted with graphic simplicity. There is much instruction of knowledge must be represented. Interesting facts and as well as aurusement to be derived from Dr. Kiuns's scholarly comamusing anecdotes are plentifully intermingled with the drier pilation."-" The Daily Telegraph" (London). statements, and the tendency to discursiveness in this respect, of which Dr. Kinns accuses himself, will be considered by many to impart another charm to his work. An excellent index proves of great assistance to the reader, and numerous engravings are introduced throughout an admirably produced book."-"The Morning Post" (London).

"Every page stands on its own merits, and the book may be opened anywhere, for it is a tour through all creation, in all time and space. This book is a vision of the Divine work. It is nature treated reverentially and exactly. The increasing wonders of the heavens, the revelations of the spectroscope and of chemical analysis, the volcano that breaks out here or there, but is under us everywhere, the successive flora and fauna' of old worlds, our increasing acquaintance with the sun and stars, the most remarkable geological formations, the garden of Eden still surviving in flowers and perfumes, are successively brought before us with graceful and picturesque effect. This may be called a holiday book, and not likely to be laid down without leaving a new mark on the memory, and on the heart as well."-"The Times" (London).

My Life in Christ

Being extracts from the Diary of the Most Rev, JOHN ILIYTCH SERGIEFF (Father John). Translated by E. E. GOULAEFF, St. Petersburg. Size 5x8%; 570 pages: Photogravure Portrait of Author. English cloth, gold stamping, $3.50.

FROM AUTHOR'S NOTE: " Everything contained in it (his book) is but a gracious enlightenment which was bestowed upon my soul by the all-enlightening Holy Ghost during moments of deep selfconcentration and of self-examination, especially during prayer. When I had time I noted down the edifying thoughts and feelings that came to me, and from these notes, continued for many years, this book has now been completed."

"Father Ivan, or John of Cronstadt, known and revered in every nook and corner of Russia . . . is, indeed, a true physician of the Gospel.

"Father John's life is one of uninterrupted and self-sacrificing charity and Christian ministration among the poor, the sick and the needy; not, however, refusing his presence and prayers to the well-to-do and rich, who send for him when other help fails, and never in vain, from all parts of the country.

"He advocates no impracticable Christian theories like Tolstov, his life is one entirely of good works, and his influence for good among the Russian masses, who have not yet reached the state of cynical unbelief of the lower orders in other countries, is greater, perhaps, than of any Russian under the Czar."-Extract from the London "Times" of January 13, 1891.

.

"The book is admirably illustrated; indeed, it may fairly be described as one of the best illustrated works, as to the excellence, number, variety and appropriate character of the engravings, that could be desired. Scores of the most remarkable sculptures are rendered with a fidelity that could not well be surpassed, and the portraits of eminent Orientalists are very properly included. Altogether, Dr. Kinns has produced a work that exhibits much patient inquiry in a wide field of research, and which will enable readers to understand many allusions in the Bible that have hitherto been obscured simply by the want of such knowledge as is here provided."-"The Morning Post" (London).

"Graven in the Rock,' by the Rev. Samuel Kinns, Ph.D., supplies much interesting information. It consists of eighteen chapters, the first of which is introductory. The others cover the whole period of sacred history, from the earlier portions of Genesis to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The publishers have done their part remarkably well, so that externally, as well as internally, we only see what we approve. Paper, printing, illustratious and covers all have their share of our praise. His work is one of the greatest interest and value.""The Queen" (London).

The Ven. Archdeacon in his original preface says tures have not been thrown together hastily, or without much thought and prayer. And the number of the books which have been consulted and of the opinions which have been weighed will at any rate show that the writer's task has been one of no small labor. He has indeed had the subject before him for years and has been in the habit of noting down whatever he found bearing upon it in the course of his reading. He has done what he could

in a work which everyone desired to see attempted, but which every one shrunk from attempting.""

The Author in his preface says:

"Tuberculosis offers many aspects for study. These have been considered under different headings and in many different volumes; but no one book in English, so far as I am aware, is devoted to the subject as a whole. For this reason I venture to believe that a concise manual, dealing with all the heads of Tuberculosis in one volume, will form a work of reference of some interest and value to practitioners of medicine and medical students. It is for them that this work is primarily intended. Tuberculosis is the Nemesis of overcrowding, of squalor, of departure from the conditions of a healthy animal life. Immunity from Tuberculosis is a large portion of the reward which a community may hope to derive from good sanitation, from light, from air, from all that is sound in the progress of civilization, and all that is conducive to the material and moral welfare of the masses. It is thus a Social as well as a Medical Problem."
