3661 PHIZ.-SIR GUY DE GUY, a Stirring Romaunt, showing how the Briton drilled for his Fatherland. Won a Heiress, Got a Pedigree, and Caught the Rheumatism. 1864. FIRST EDITION with six full-page coloured plates and forty other illustrations, all by "PHIZ," 8vo, choicely bound in calf extra, gilt back, sides, and inside borders, with the original cloth covers preserved at end, by RIVIERE, £1 158

"The largest series of illustrations Phiz' produced in the time under consideration was the work ultimately published under the title of Sir Guy de Guy,' in 1864. These consisted of between fifty and sixty quarto drawings, and the artist's original idea was to publish the series by lithography as The Adventures of Pott,' with a rhyming commentary by himself. The artist carried the sketches to Mr. George Halse, and asked his advice in the matter. Mr. Halse, having some experience in literary undertakings, saw at once the merits of the designs and the poverty of the accompanying verses. He suggested an alteration in the projected work, made a selection of forty from the series, and, at the artist's request, wrote poetical letterpress to go with the work. Sir Guy de Guy' was the result, and Mr. Halse took the nom de plume of Rattlebrain' for the occasion. The title and scheme of the book as published were entirely Mr. Halse's, who utilised the drawings as far as possible, and when they were unsuitable the designs were altered to suit the text. The Athenæum at the time called the book 'a remarkably brilliant example of its kind.'” -Thomson's "Life of Phiz."

3662 PRIOR (Matthew) The Hind and the Panther, Traversed to the Story of the Country Mouse and the City Mouse. London, 1687. FIRST EDITION, 4to, 188 Dryden's poem, "The Hind and Panther," was not likely to escape the attacks of the wits, for in the same year Matthew Prior, then a student at St. John's, Cambridge, and Charles Montagu, Earl of Halifax, issued the above. Montagu is credited with the preface only. When Spence asked Lord Peterborough whether Montagu did not write The Country Mouse in conjunction with Prior, "Yes," was the answer, "as if I were in a chaise with Mr. Cheselden here drawn by his fine horse, and should say, Lord how finely we draw the chaise.'" Prior does not seem to have been contented with his share of profit or of fame, for when he heard that King William had granted Montagu a pension of £500 per annum until an appointment could be found for him, he exclaimed: My friend Charles Montagu's preferred

Nor could I have it long observed

That one mouse eats, whiles t'other's starved."
