FAIT

HYMN XXXVIII.

AITH adds new joy to earthly bliss, And saves us from its snares: Fresh aid in ev'ry duty brings,

And softens all our cares.

2 Faith mortifies the love of sin,
Kindles the sacred fire

Of love to God, and heavenly things,
And feeds the pure desire.

3 The wounded conscience knows its power
The healing balm to give:
That balm the saddest heart can cheer,
And make the dying live.

4 Faith draws aside the veil of heav'n,
Where unknown glories reign;
And bids us seek our portion there;
Nor bids us seek in vain.

5 Faith holds to view the promise, seal'd
With the Redeemer's blood;

And helps our feeble hope to rest
Upon a faithful God.

6 There, there unshaken may we rest,
Till this vile body dies;

And then, on faith's triumphant wings,
To endless glory rise.

HYMN XXXIX.

L. M.

WHAT various hindrances we meet
In coming to a mercy seat;
Yet who that knows the worth of
But wishes to be often there ?

prayer,

2 Pray'r makes the darken'd cloud withdraw,
Pray'r climbs the ladder Jacob saw;
Gives exercise to faith and love,
Brings ev'ry blessing from above.

3 Restraining pray'r, we cease to fight; Pray'r makes the Christian's armour bright; And Satan trembles when he sees

The weakest saint upon his knees.

4 While Moses stood with arms spread wide,
Success was found on Israel's side;
But when through weariness they fail'd,
That moment Amalek prevail'd.

5 Have you no words? Ah, think again,
Words flow apace when you complain,
And fill your fellow-creature's ear
With the sad tale of all your care.

6 Were half the breath thus vainly spent,
To heav'n in supplication sent,

Your cheerful song would oftener be,
'Hear what the Lord has done for me!'

NO keep the lamp alive,
With oil we fill the bowl;

'Tis water makes the willow thrive,
And grace that feeds the soul.

2 The Lord's unsparing hand
Supplies the living stream:
It is not at our own command,
But still derived from him.

3 Beware of Peter's word,
Nor confidently say,

I never will deny thee, Lord,'
But, grant I never may!'

4 Man's wisdom is to seek

His strength in God alone;
And e'en an angel would be weak,
Who trusted in his own.

5 Retreat beneath his wings,
And in his grace confide;
This more exalts the King of kings,
Than all your works beside.

6 In Jesus is our store;

Grace issues from his throne;
Whoever says, 'I want no more,
Confesses he has none.

NOME, let our voice ascend
In one glad song of praise;

To God, the God of love,

Our grateful hearts we raise.

Congregation.

To God alone the praise belongs,
He claims our earliest, latest songs.

Children.

2 Now we are taught to read
The book of life divine;
Where our Redeemer's love,
And brightest glories shine.

Congregation.

To God alone the praise is due,
Who sends his word to us and you.

Children.

3 Within these hallow'd walls
Our wand'ring feet are brought,
Where pray'r and praise ascend,
And heav'nly truths are taught.

Congregation.

To God alone your praises bring,
Let young and old his praises sing.

Congregation and Children.

4 Lord, bid this work of love

Be crown'd with meet success :
May thousands, yet unborn,
This institution bless.

Thus shall the praise resound to thee,
In time and to eternity.

as the purpose of the skies, This promise meets our anxious eyes, That heathen lands the Lord shall know, And warm with faith each bosom glow.

2 E'en now the hallow'd scenes appear;
E'en now unfolds the promis'd year:
Lo! distant shores thy heralds trace,
And swell the tidings of thy grace.

3 'Mid burning climes and frozen plains,
Where pagan darkness brooding reigns;
Oh! mark their steps, their fears subdue,
And nerve their arm, and clear their view!
