1TH HE Lord will come! the earth shall quake,

The hills their fixed seat forsake;
And, with'ring, from the vault of night
The stars withdraw their feeble light.
2 The Lord will come! but not the same
As once in lowly form he came,
A silent lamb to slaughter led,

The bruis'd, the suff'ring, and the dead. 3 The Lord will come! a dreadful form,

With wreath of flame and robe of storm;
On cherub wings and wings of wind,
Anointed Judge of human kind!

4 Can this be He who wont to stray
A pilgrim on the world's highway;
By pow'r oppress'd, and mock'd by pride?
Oh God! is this the crucified?

5 Go, tyrants, to the rocks complain!
Go, seek the mountain's cleft in vain!
But Faith, victorious o'er the tomb,
Shall sing for joy- The Lord is come!'

H Saviour! is thy promise fled?
Nor longer might thy grace endure,
To heal the sick and raise the dead,
And preach thy gospel to the poor?

L2

2 Come, Jesus! come! return again; With brighter beam thy servants bless; Who long to feel thy perfect reign, And share thy kingdom's happiness. 3 A feeble race, by passion driv'n,

In darkness and in doubt we roam; And lift our anxious eyes to heav'n, Our hope, our harbour, and our home! 4 Yet 'mid the wild and wintry gale,

When Death rides darkly o'er the sea, And strength and earthly daring fail, Our pray❜rs, Redeemer, rest on thee. 5 Come, Jesus! come! and as of yore The prophet went to clear thy way, A harbinger thy feet before,

A dawning to thy brighter day:

6 So now, may grace with heav'nly shower
Our stony hearts for truth prepare;
Sow in our souls the seed of power,
Then come and reap thy harvest there!

HYMN V.

Christmas.

C. M.

HIGH let us swell our tuneful notes,
And join th' angelic throng;

The angels no such love have known
As we, to wake their song.

2 Good will to sinful men is shown,
And peace on earth is given;
For lo! th' incarnate Saviour comes
With messages from heav'n.

3 Justice and grace, with sweet accord,
His rising beams adorn:
Let heav'n and earth in concert join,
"The promis'd child is born.'

4 Glory to God in highest strains
By highest worlds is paid;
Be glory then by us proclaim'd,
And by our lives display'd.

5 When shall we reach those blissful realms, Where Christ exalted reigns?

And learn of the celestial choir
Their own immortal strains?

HYMN VI.

(7's.)

Christmas.

1 ARK! the herald angels sing

Glory to the new-born King!
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God to man is reconcil'd!

2 Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumphs of the skies;
With th' angelic host proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.'

[ocr errors]

3 Christ, by highest heav'n ador'd
Christ, the everlasting Lord:
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of a Virgin's womb.

4 Veil'd in flesh the Godhead see!
Hail th' incarnate Deity!

Pleas'd as man with us t' appear;
Jesus, our Immanuel, here!

5 Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the sun of righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Ris'n with healing in his wings.
6 Mild he lays his glory by;
Born that man no more may die;
Born to raise the sons of earth;
Born to give them second birth.

O! in the east appears a light,
In eastern skies unseen before;
The wise men hail the welcome sight,
And seek the myst'ry to explore.

2 These ancient sages, led from far,

Began their doubtful, anxious way;
Nor rested till the wand'ring star
Stood o'er the place where Jesus lay.

3 They came-they saw-and they ador'd; Each costly treasure they unfold, And offer to their infant Lord,

Their myrrh, their frankincense, and gold. 4 That star to us its life imparts; Let us our pilgrimage pursue, And, with the homage of our hearts, To Bethl'em go and worship too. 5 May we through life its guidance trace, And mark its path o'er earthly things, Until it lead us to the place

Where Jesus reigns the King of kings. 6 Light of the world, the true light! rise, Nor cease to shed thy cheering ray, "Till o'er all lands beneath the skies, Thy glory shine in perfect day.

HYMN VIII.

Epiphany.

(7's.)

1 ONS of men, behold from far,
Hail the long-expected star!

Jacob's star that gilds the night,
Guides bewilder'd nature right.

2 Mild it shines on all beneath,

Piercing through the shades of death;
Scatt'ring error's wide-spread night,
Kindling darkness into light.
