3 Nations all, remote and near,
Haste to see your God appear;
Haste, for him your hearts prepare,
Meet him manifested there.
4 Sing, ye morning stars, again;
God descends to dwell with men ;
Deigns for man his life t'employ;
Shout, ye sons of God, for joy!

LORD, whose love in pow'r excelling,
Wash'd the leper's stain away;

Jesus! from thy heav'nly dwelling,
Hear us, help us, when we pray.
2 From the filth of vice and folly,
From infuriate passion's rage,
Evil thoughts, and hopes unholy,
Heedless youth, and selfish age.
3 From the lusts whose deep pollutions
Adam's ancient taint disclose;
From the Tempter's dark intrusions,
Restless doubt, and blind repose.
4 From the miser's love of treasure,
From the drunkard's jest obscene,
From the world, its pomp, and pleasure,
Jesus! Master! make us clean!

Quinquagesima Sunday.

FOR CHRISTIAN LOVE.

UR God is love: and all his saints,
His image bear below:

The heart with love to God inspired,
With love to man will glow.

2 O may we love each other, Lord!
As we are lov'd of thee;
For none are truly born of God,
Who live in enmity.

3 Heirs of the same immortal bliss,
Our hopes and fears the same;

The cords of love our hearts should bind, The law of love inflame.

4 So shall the vain contentious world Our peaceful lives approve:

1

And wond'ring say, as they of old,
See how these Christians love!'

OH

[blocks in formation]

H help us, Lord! each hour of need
Thy heav'nly succour give:

Help us in thought, and word, and deed,
Each hour on earth we live.

2 Oh help us, when our spirits bleed, With contrite anguish sore;

And when our hearts are cold and dead, Oh help us Lord the more!

3 Oh help us, through the pray'r of faith
More firmly to believe;

For still the more the servant hath,
The more shall he receive.

4 If strangers to thy fold we call,
Imploring at thy feet

The crumbs that from thy table fall,
"Tis all we dare entreat.

5 But be it, Lord of mercy, all,
So thou wilt grant but this;
The crumbs that from thy table fall,
Are light, and life, and bliss.
6 Oh help us, Jesus! from on high,
We know no help but thee;
Oh help us so to live and die,
As thine in heaven to be!

HYMN XII. D. C. M.

Passion Week.

EE! what unbounded zeal and love
Inflam'd the Saviour's breast,

When steadfast tow'rds Jerusalem,
His urgent way he press'd.

Good-will to man, and zeal for God,
His ev'ry thought engross:

He longs to be baptiz'd with blood,
He thirsts to reach the cross.

2 With all his suff'rings full in view,
And woes to us unknown;
Forth to the work his spirit flew;
'Twas love that urg'd him on.
By his obedience unto death,
See paradise restor❜d;

And fallen man brought face to face
With his forgiving Lord.

3 Prepare us, Lord, to view thy cross,
Who all our griefs hast borne,

To look on thee, whom we have pierc'd,
To look on thee, and mourn:
While thus we mourn, may we rejoice,
And, as thy cross we see,

May each exclaim, in faith and hope,
The Saviour died for me!'

HYMN XIII.

Passion Week.

'ECCE HOMO!

(7's.)

16 BEHOLD the man!' can this be He? Nature's undisputed Lord;

To whom archangels bow the knee;
God, by earth and heav'n ador'd?

2 See him here, how alter'd now,
Sinking to his sinless grave!

Pierc'd with thorns his righteous brow,
Mock'd by those he came to save!
3 See the large round drops of blood,
Coursing silent down his cheek;
How shall e'er be understood
The agony those drops bespeak!
4 Hear him pour the lowly pray'r,
Father, spare thine only Son!
This bitter cup in mercy spare,
Yet thy will, not mine be done.'
5 Was it, blessed Lord, for me
That dark hour of pain you bore?
Give me faith to come to thee,
Grace to go and sin no more.'

HYMN XIV.

C. M.

Passion Week.

1DA

ARK was the night, and cold the ground
On which the Lord was laid;

His sweat like drops of blood ran down:
In agony he pray'd.

2 Father! remove this bitter cup,

If such thy sacred will :

If not, content to drink it up,
Thy pleasure I fulfil.'
