3 Go to the garden, sinner! see Those precious drops that flow; The heavy load he bore for thee; For thee he lies so low.
4 Then learn of him the cross to bear, Thy Father's will obey;
And, when temptations sore draw near, Awake to watch and pray.
HE morning dawns upon the place Where Jesus spent the night in pray'r; Sorrows unknown have marr'd his face: No form of comeliness is there.
2 See him by those he call'd his own, Betray'd, forsaken, or denied, To judgement brought he stands alone, Arraign'd, condemn'd, and crucified. 3 No guile within his mouth is found; He neither threatens nor complains; Meek as a lamb for slaughter bound, A willing victim he remains.
4 He bears their buffeting and scorn, Mock-homage of the lip and knee, The purple robe, the crown of thorn, The scourge, the nail, th' accursed tree.
5 He dies: the vail is rent in twain, Darkness o'er all the land is spread; In ev'ry bosom terrors reign; [dead. Earth quakes; the graves give up their 6 Truly this was the Son of God!'
To him let sinners turn their eyes; Now bruis'd beneath his Father's rod, Not for himself-for man he dies.
ESUS Christ is ris'n to-day-Hallelujah! Our triumphant holy day;
Who so lately on the cross, Suffer'd to redeem our loss.
2 Hymns of praises let us sing Unto Christ our heav'nly King; Who endur'd the cross and grave, Sinners to redeem and save. 3 For the pains which he endur'd Our salvation have secur'd: Now he reigns above the sky,
Where the angels ever cry-Hallelujah!
110. HYMN XVII.
HRIST the Lord is ris'n to-day,' Sons of men and angels say;
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Sing ye heav'ns, and earth reply.
2 Vain the stone, the watch, the seal, Christ hath burst the gates of hell; Death in vain forbids his rise, Christ hath open'd paradise.
3 Lives again our glorious King; Where, O Death, is now thy sting? Once he died our souls to save; Where's thy victory, O Grave? 4 Soar we now where Christ hath led, Following our exalted Head; Made like him, like him we rise; Ours the cross, the grave, the skies. 5 What though once we perish'd all, Partners of our parents' fall! Second life we now receive,
If in Jesus we believe.
6 Hail! the Lord of earth and heav'n! Praise to thee by both be given: Thee we greet triumphant now: Hail! the resurrection Thou!
HAIL the day that sees him rise,
Glorious to his native skies!
Christ, awhile to mortals giv'n, Enters now the highest heav'n.
2 There the glorious triumph waits; 'Lift your heads, eternal gates: 'Christ hath vanquish'd death and sin, Take the King of Glory in.'
3 See! the heav'n its Lord receives! Yet he loves the earth he leaves. Though returning to his throne, Still he calls mankind his own. 4 Still for us he intercedes; His prevailing death he pleads; Near himself prepares our place, Harbinger of human race.
5 O! though parted from our sight, Far above yon azure height, Grant our hearts may thither rise, Seeking thee above the skies.
PIRIT of truth! on this thy day, To thee for help we cry,
To guide us through the dreary way Of dark mortality!
2 We ask not, Lord, thy cloven flame, Or tongues of various tone:
But long thy praises to proclaim With fervour in our own.
3 We mourn not that prophetic skill Is found on earth no more; Enough for us to trace thy will In Scripture's sacred lore.
4 We neither have nor seek the power Ill demons to control;
For thou, in dark temptation's hour, Shalt chase them from the soul. 5 No heavenly harpings soothe our ear, No mystic dreams we share; Yet hope to feel thy comfort near, And bless thee in our prayer.
6 When tongues shall cease, and power decay, And knowledge empty prove,
Do thou thy trembling servants stay With faith, with hope, with love!
REATOR Spirit! By whose aid
The world's foundations first were laid,
Come visit every pious mind,
Come pour thy joys on all mankind; From sin and sorrow set us free, And make us temples worthy thee.
2 Thou strength of his almighty hand, Whose pow'r does heav'n and earth command:
