the Garden, and he hid himself in a serpent, that he might the more easily persuade Eve to listen to him. Then he talked to Eve, and tempted her to disobey the command of God. Eve did not run away, she did not refuse to hear. No; she talked with the Tempter; she knew his words were wicked, because they tempted her to disobey God,and yet she listened. God, you remember, had told Adam and Eve that there was one tree the fruit of which they were not to eatand that if they did eat of it they should die. But Satan tried to make Eve wish very much for that fruit; he told her it would make her very wise; and he also said that she would not die if she did taste it: and so he tempted her to disobey the command of God. She looked at the forbidden fruit, and when she looked, she longed for it; and then she put forth her hand and took of the fruit, and did eat, and she gave also to her husband with her, and he did eat. They turned from the holy Commandment delivered to them, and became disobedient. Now they were guilty

sinners before God, instead of being His holy, happy, obedient children. You know that you are sometimes tempted to be disobedient. A wish comes into your heart to do the thing you have been told not to do. When that disobedient wish comes, remember that it is a sinful wish; think of Eve in the beautiful garden, and do not listen to that sinful thought. Think of God your Heavenly Father, who has told you to "be obedient in all things," and ask Him to take the sinful thought out of your heart; then will you be a happy child, and grow in love and obedience every day. But if at any time you know that you have been disobedient, then make haste to your Saviour, go and kneel at the feet of Jesus, and tell Him all; and ask Him to forgive you, and to wash your sinful heart clean in His precious blood. Never try to hide your disobedience, but confess your fault, and be sorry for your sin; then you will find help in time to come to do as Jesus tells youto "watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation."

When the cool evening came, they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the Garden; and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord among the trees in the Garden. And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And Adam said, I heard Thy voice in the Garden, and I was afraid. Adam knew that he was guilty, his heart trembled for fear, and he was afraid of God's judgments. Satan was full of cruel triumph-he thought he had made Adam and Eve as miserable as himself -he thought he had destroyed the works of God. But Satan did not know the power of God's LOVE. Satan knew the power of God's ANGER, for it had made him fall as swift as lightning from Heaven; but he did not know that God's LOVE was as strong as His ANGER. God's ANGER had driven the wicked Tempter down from Heaven, but God's LOVE would raise and lift up poor "broken-hearted" sinners to that blessed and holy Heaven, from which Satan had been driven away for ever.

Adam and Eve stood guilty and afraid before
