PREFACE.

The text of the sections of this edition of the Penal Code has been carefully compared with the editions heretofore published, and, whenever necessity required it, with the original acts on file in the office of the Secretary of State.

For the convenience of the practitioner, we have also inserted the provisions of the Code of Civil Procedure relating to juries, contempts, and evidence, and have added an appendix, in which will be found either the statutes themselves, or a reference to the statutes containing penal clauses, not a part of the Penal Code.

A "table of cases cited" has been deemed unnecessary, although the notes contain citations of several thousand cases and authorities.

The index includes an index of the notes.

SACRAMENTO, August 1, 1881.

C. L. W.
