selves, and know that this is indeed the Christ the Saviour of the world.

Now Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where He made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judæa into Galilee, he went unto Him, and besought Him that He would come down, and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. The nobleman saith unto Him, Sir, come down, ere my child die. Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way, thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. And as he was going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth. Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto them, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. So the father knew that it was at the same hour in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth; and himself believed, and his whole house. Now Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, and said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist: he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison, for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted John as a prophet. But when Herod's birthday was kept, the

daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod, whereupon he promised with an oath that he would give her whatsoever she should ask. And she, being before instructed by her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. And the king was sorry, nevertheless, for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. And he sent and beheaded John in the prison. And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and came and told Jesus. So Herod said, John have I beheaded, but who is this of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see Him.

Who came to Jesus by night, and what did Jesus tell him?
What witness did John the Baptist bear of our Lord?
What happened to the woman at Jacob's well ?
How did the nobleman shew his faith in our Lord?

Did Herod hear of Jesus? and what did he say?

Tell me how holy John the Baptist was put to death? and why?

Et is E, be not Afraid.

HE night was dark, the wind was loud,
The ship went driving on,

No star came shining through the cloud,

And no bright moon looked down.

Then the disciples, full of fear,

Tossed by the foaming wave, Wished, in their hearts, for Jesus near, From shipwreck them to save.

When lo, they see a Form go by,

Treading the stormy sea; And hear a voice say, It is I,

And therefore fear not ye.

Said Peter, Lord, if it be Thou,
Bid me to come to Thee;

And Jesus answering, Come, then, now!
He leaped into the sea;

And, wondering, felt his feet to tread

Like land the swelling wave,
Till, losing faith, he, sinking, said,
I perish, Lord, O save.

Then Jesus caught his hand, and saith,
Drawing him safely out,

O Peter, thou of little faith,

But wherefore didst thou doubt?

CHAPTER XLI.

The Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes. Jesus walks on the Sea. The Transfiguration. Our Lord Blesses Little Children.

OW the apostles, when they were returned, gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told Him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. And He said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest awhile; for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert place by ship privately. And the people saw them departing, and many knew Him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto Him.

And Jesus, when He came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion towards them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd, and He began to teach them many things. And when the day was now far spent, His disciples came unto Him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed. Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread, for they have nothing to eat. He answered and said unto them,

Give ye them to eat. And they say unto Him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see.

And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes. And He commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, He looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them, and the two fishes divided He among them all. And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men, beside women and children. And straightway He constrained His disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while He sent away the people. And when He had sent the multitude away, He went up into a mountain apart to pray; and when the evening was come, He was there alone. But the ship was in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I, be not afraid. And Peter answered Him and said, Lord, if it be Thou, bid me come unto Thee, on the water.
