It had been good for

the Son of man is betrayed! that man if he had not been born. And when He had dipped the sop, He gave it to Judas Iscariot the son of Simon. And after the sop Satan entered into him. He then having received the sop went immediately out. And it was night. Therefore when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him. Little children, yet a little while I am with you. A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are My disciples, if ye have love one to another.

And when they had sung an hymn they went out into the mount of Olives. Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of Me this night; for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. Peter answered and said unto Him, Though all men shall be offended because of Thee, yet will I never be offended. Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny Me thrice. Peter said unto Him, Though I should die with Thee, yet will I not deny Thee. Likewise also

said all the disciples.

Tell me the parable of the ten virgins.

How did our Lord teach us that we shall be judged?
At the time of what great feast was Jesus to be betrayed?
Which of the apostles sold our Lord, and for how much?
Where did our Lord eat the Last Supper, and with whom?
What did Jesus do to teach His apostles humility?

Gethsemane.

M

IDNIGHT in dark Gethsemane,
And Jesus kneeleth there,
Beneath those groves of olive trees,

Upon the ground in prayer.

Peter and James and John He bade
A watch with Him to keep;
But they forgot their Lord, and lay,

Far off from Him, asleep.

He prayed-His sweat ran down like blood

He agonized alone;

But still He cried, O Father, not

My will, but Thine, be done.

Dear Saviour, wherefore was Thy blood
Poured out upon the ground?
And why wast Thou forsaken, sad,
In that dark garden found?

It was for us Thy knees were bowed―
For us that agony-

That blood of innocence was shed
That we might ransomed be.

O when dark hours for us draw near
(They must for every one),

May we, like Thee, in sharpest pang,
Still say, Thy will be done.

CHAPTER XLV.

The Agony in the Garden. Judas betrays our Lord. Peter denies Him. Jesus before Pilate. Barabbas is preferred to Jesus.

HEN Jesus went with His disciples over the brook Cedron, into a garden, called Gethsemane. And Judas also, which betrayed Him, knew the place, for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with His disciples. And Jesus said unto His disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And He took with Him Peter, and James, and John, and began to be sorrowful, and very heavy. Then saith He unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful even unto death; tarry ye here, and watch with Me. And He went a little farther, about a stone's cast, and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, O My Father, if it be possible let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou wilt. And there appeared unto Him an angel, strengthening Him. And being in an agony, He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when He rose up from prayer He cometh to the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with Me

one hour? Watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O My Father, if this cup may not pass away from Me except I drink it, Thy will be done. And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy. And He left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then cometh He to His disciples, and saith unto them, Rise, let us be going; behold, he is at hand that doth betray Me. While He yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanthorns and torches and weapons. Now he that betrayed Him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is He; take Him, and lead Him away safely. And as soon as he was come he goeth straight to Jesus, and said, Hail, Master, and kissed Him. But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to My Father and He shall presently give Me more than twelve legions of angels? And He touched his ear and healed him. Then all the disciples forsook Him, and fled. Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus and
