thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes, and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house. And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go. And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go; now therefore depart, and go in peace. But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and now do they thrust us out privily? Nay, verily, but let them come themselves and fetch us out. And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates; and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans. And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city. And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

The Teaching of St. Paul.

AUL was a persecutor once,

And Christian blood he shed;
The martyr Stephen at his feet
Lay silent, bleeding, dead.

But Stephen, like his blessed Lord,
Even with his dying breath,
Prayed for God's mercy upon those
Who caused his bitter death.

And God had mercy upon Saul,
And turned his heart to see
The love of Jesus, saying, Saul,

Why persecut'st thou Me?

From that same time Saul, then called Paul, To heal, and not to kill,

Went journeying everywhere, and taught

The infant Church God's will.

Fasting and weeping, and in chains,
Yet still with earnest heart,
Beseeching Jews and Gentiles too
To choose "the better part."

Full many a letter did he write
(Some day you'll read them all)
To different nations, they are called
"Epistles of St. Paul.”

CHAPTER LII.

The Journeyings of St. Paul.

Paul before Felix and

King Agrippa.

HEN Paul went to Thessalonica, preaching that Jesus was Christ, and then to Berea,

where the Jews received the word with all readiness of mind, searching the scriptures daily, whether those things were so; and after this to Athens. Now while Paul waited at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. And, standing in the midst of Mars' hill, he said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To the Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, Him declare I unto you. Then he preached to them of Jesus. And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter. After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth. And found a certain Jew and his wife Priscilla, lately come from Italy, because Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome. And abode with them, and wrought, being of the same craft, for they were tent makers. And

he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks. And when they opposed and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said, Your blood be upon your own heads: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles. But Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord, with all his house. And many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized. Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night, by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace. For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee; for I have much people in this city. And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them, and then went to Ephesus, where 'they prayed him to tarry. But Paul bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem; but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus. And when he had landed at Cæsarea, and gone up and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch. And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia, in order, strengthening all the disciples. And he returned to Ephesus. And this continued during the space of two years, so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks. And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul. So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. Now Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia,

to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome. And he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost. And, calling the elders of the church, he said to them, Ye know from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons, testifying both to the Jews and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there. Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying, that bonds and afflictions abide me. But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more. Then, exhorting them to take care of the church of God, he commended them to God's grace, adding, I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all. And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul's neck, and kissed him, sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him to the ship. And, coming to Cæsarea, Paul and his companions tarried many days. And there came down from Judæa a certain prophet,
