PREFACE.

THE task of editing a new edition of this book was entrusted by the publishers to the late H. M. Robertson, and, when he entered the Army in 1915, his work was finished as regards the inclusion of cases decided up to the end of 1914. With the cessation of hostilities in November, 1918, the work of completing the new edition had to be considered, for, to the deep regret of his friends, personal and professional, H. M. Robertson had been killed when on active service. It was undertaken by myself, Mr. A. T. Bucknill being kind enough to complete the chapter on Collisions. The result has been a further revision of the whole text of the book.

Another point had also arisen because it had been arranged by the publishers to amalgamate, if possible, with this work some parts of the Admiralty book known as "Williams & Bruce," the last edition of which was published in 1902. Under the circumstances it seemed convenient that the chapters of this book should follow the order of the earlier work. As regards
