THE Great Concern of Salvation was not prepared for the press by its lamented author. It was originally prepared as a series of discourses to the people of Ceres parish, of which he was then minister. The former editions of the work are in the form in which it was first written, and in which it was left by the author at his decease. The present edition is re-written and abridged, for the Presbyterian Board of, Publication. It is also divided into sections and chapters, and freed from many of the numerical subdivisions of former editions. The Scotticisms and obsolete words of the original

are none of them retained; and some paragraphs which were either of a local nature or not im

in a printed book, are wholly omitted. It has been the design to give the principal thoughts and reasonings of the original, in as concise a form as the nature and object of the work would permit. Of the character of the author, and the excellence of his writings, it is not important here to speak; they have long been known to the Christian public. The writer will only add, that, however imperfectly he may have abridged the “Great Concern of Salvation,' the advantages derived from it are a rich reward for all his labour. To no book, except the Bible, has he been more indebted than to this
