HIS Association was founded at Cambridge on June 1st, 1918, and numbers about 800 members. Its main object is the encouragement of advanced study in Modern Languages and Literatures by co-operation, through correspondence, personal intercourse, the interchange of information and counsel, and financial support for students engaged in research. The Association aims at improving and facilitating means and methods, and seeks such a co-ordination of isolated effort that those interested or engaged in the same branch of research shall be kept informed of each other's work, and that unnecessary duplication of energy shall be avoided. The Association, to further these aims, (i) puts members who have interest in cognate subjects into touch with one another through the Secretary; (ii) collects and circulates information and suggestions likely to be of permanent use to research students; (iii) procures specialised information for members who are prevented from making personal investigations; (iv) organises co-operative research on the part of those who have not the opportunities to do much individual work; (v) publishes the Modern Language Review; a quarterly Bulletin describing the proceedings and activities of the Association; and an annual Bibliography of English language and literature. It hopes, as soon as funds permit, (vi) to publish the collective and individual work of its members upon a larger scale, (vii) to found bursaries and scholarships for the furtherance of its objects. Membership of the M.H.R.A. is open to graduate students of all countries, to other persons, at the discretion of the Committee, and to approved institutions and associations. Groups of members with similar interests may be formed within the Association. Persons duly qualified for membership may become: 1. Ordinary members, if actually engaged in or contemplating research. 2. Associate members, if in sympathy with the aims of the Association, but not personally engaged in research. The minimum annual subscription for ordinary and associate members is 7/6, payable to the Hon. Treasurer on the 1st of October in each year for the academic year ending on the following 30th of September. Life membership is granted upon a single payment of £5. 5s.; perpetual i membership (for institutions and associations) £10. 10s. All members are asked to send a yearly contribution, however small, to the CAPITAL FUND, upon the development of which depends the future work of the Association.
