Lay down, thou weary one, lay down Thy head upon my breast."
2 I came to Jesus as I was,
Weary and worn and sad; I found in him a resting-place, And he has made me glad.
3 I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Behold! I freely give The living water: thirsty one, Stoop down, and drink and live!"
4 I came to Jesus, and I drank
Of that life-giving stream:
My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, And now I live in him.
Like thee, to do our Father's will, Our brother's griefs to share.
3 Let grace our selfishness expel, Our earthliness refine; And kindness in our bosoms dwell, As free and true as thinc.
4 If joy shall at thy bidding fly,
And grief's dark day come on, We in our turn would meekly cry, "Father, thy will be done."
5 Should friends misjudge, or foes defame, Or brethren faithless prove, Then, like thine own, be all our aim To conquer them by love.
6 Kept peaceful in the midst of strife, Forgiving and forgiven,
Oh may we lead the pilgrim's life, And follow thee to heaven!
2 Not the labors of my hands
Can fulfil thy law's demands: Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears for ever flow, All for sin could not atone: Thou must save, and thou alone.
3 Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to thy cross I cling; Naked, come to thee for dress; Helpless, look to thee for grace; Foul, I to thy fountain fly: Wash me, Saviour, or I die.
Whilst I draw this fleeting breath, When my eye-strings break in death, When I soar through tracts unknown, See thee on thy judgment-throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in thee.
1 CHRIST, whose glory fills the skies; Christ, the true, the only light, Sun of Righteousness, arise, Triumph o'er the shades of night. Dayspring from on high, be near; Day-star, in my heart appear.
2 Dark and cheerless is the morn, If thy light is hid from me; Joyless is the day's return, Till thy mercy's beams I see, Till thy inward light impart Warmth and gladness to my heart.
3 Visit, then, this soul of mine; Pierce the gloom of sin and grief; Fill me, radiant Sun divine; Scatter all my unbelief; More and more thyself display, Shining to the perfect day.
1 Go to dark Gethsemane, Ye that feel temptation's power: Your Redeemer's conflict sce, Watch with him one bitter hour: Turn not from his griefs away; Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.
2 Follow to the judgment-hall;
View the Lord of life arraigned: Oh the wormwood and the gall! Oh the griefs his soul sustained! Shun not suffering, shame, or loss: Learn of him to bear the cross.
3 Calvary's mournful mountain climb: There, admiring at his feet, Mark that miracle of time, Love's own sacrifice complete: "It is finished," hear him cry; Learn of Jesus Christ to die.
Early hasten to the tomb Where they laid his breathless clay: All is solitude and gloom; Who has taken him away?
Christ is risen; he meets our cycs. Saviour, teach us so to rise.
