THE ANTHESTERIA, an Athenian festival in honour of " plumpy Bacchus, with pink eyne," was held on the 11th, 12th, and 13th days of the month Anthesterion. The vessels were tapped, and tasted, on the first day; on the second the votaries "took their cups," and drank, like true Greeks, to repletion; the last day was one of abstinence, divided, most rationally, between pot-luach and the tart comedy.

The Carmentalia, a feast of dedication, was celebrated on this afternoon by the Roman matrons, in commemoration of their connubial felicity. See 15th day.

The expiatory lustrations and sacrifices are celebrated at Rome, as enjoined by the Sybilline books, which Aurelian and the senate had consulted previous to the emperor's victory at Fano over the invading Alemanni, A. D. 271.

Adam de Houghton, Bp. of St. David's, receives the great seal, 1377. The drawing of the first Public lottery begins at the west door of St. Paul's, 1569. It continued, by day and candle-light, until the 6th of May. The lots were forty thousand (without blanks), at ten shillings each, and the chief prizes consisted of plate. It seems that the profits of this scheme were to have been "converted towards the reparation of the havens, and strength of the realm, and towards such other further good works." Thus about 20,000l. was ingeniously raised by a sale, in some shape, of the royal plate and trinkets-useless new years' gifts.

A human skeleton, according to M. Le Cat, is found, in 1613, entombed eighteen feet below the surface of a spot called the Giant's Field, in Dauphiny, which was twenty-five feet and a half long, and ten feet wide across the shoulders. There appeared on a gray stone this inscription: "THEUTOBOCHUS REX."

Louis XIV. by a decree, 1680, establishes, at the Arsenal, a special court for the trial of poisoners and magicians; by which authority several persons, distinguished by their birth and titles, were gravely convicted.

Spill not the morning (which is the quintessence of the day) in recreations. For sleep itself is a recreation; add not, therefore, sauce to sauces; and he cannot properly have any title to be refreshed, who was not first faint. Pastime, like wine, is poison in the morning. It is, then, good husbandry to sow the head, which hath lain fallow all night, with some serious work.

THE COMPITALIA, a festival instituted by Servius about B. C. 576, was, according to Gellius and Macrobius, observed by the Roman slaves, on the 12th of January, as well as on the 1st of May. The Lares, guardians of all the highways, were then honoured both in town and country, and each servant was permitted to forget himself and become his own master. "If nature" (that excellent king is said to have spoken to the senate) "has made any distinction between slaves and such as are born free, we ought, indeed, to observe the order she has established, and to divide those from the rest of mankind whom she has separated from them: but, if the placing some in a state inferior to others be owing to fortune only, does it not become your wisdom to rectify the capricious determinations of a blind goddess?"

An unaccountable darkness is remarked, at noon, in England, 1678. Plough Monday, is the first Monday after Twelfth-tide, and fell, in 1829, on the present day; which agrees also with Old New Year's Day, formerly considered most auspicious for marriages. On that day, 1651, a lady presented her husband with the following nuptial posy:
