THOMAS PLANTAGENET, surnamed De Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk, is invested with the office of Earl Marshal of England, 1335. This title was conferred afterwards, in 1383, upon Thomas, Lord Mowbray; and 28th June, 1483, it was granted to Lord John Howard, on his receiving the Dukedom of Norfolk, in which noble house it is now hereditary.

The battle of Roveray, or of Herrings, 1429, in which that renowned rogue, Sir John Falstaff, with his little convoy of fifteen hundred archers, entrenched by four hundred waggons of Yarmouth herrings, repulses a body of five thousand French cavalry, and kills six hundred Scotch infantry; but whether these were salted and eaten by his tall fellows, is a problem, and the despatch which our poet had surely seen is not extant.

The dignity of Viscount is created in England by letters patent in favour of John Baron Beauchamp, 1440. The second Viscounty was conferred, 14th December, 1446, upon Henry Lord Bourchier.

This day is memorable for the murder, on the scaffold, of Lady Jane Grey: "Good Christian people, you come to see me die; not for any thing I have offended, for I will deliver to my God a soul as pure from trespass, as innocence from injustice."

The immortal Milton is admitted a Pensioner of Christ's College, Cambridge, 1625. His tutor Mr. William, afterwards Bishop, Chappell, is the reputed author of the "Whole Duty of Man ;" and Dr. Gill, Master of St. Paul's School, and a composer as it appears of ballads, was the father of Dr. Alexander Gill, Ben Jonson's scurrilous opponent, but whom the poet did not live to see degraded from the Mastership, in 1640, for his "cruelties and his crimes." UPON the thirteenth of the month Adar, was kept the Hebrew fast, instituted by Esther, in memorial of the day appointed by Haman for the extirpation of her countrymen. The same day was decreed as a feast for the death of Nicanor, the Syrian captain, but it seems to have been removed to the 15th of the month.-See 2 Macc. xv.

The feasts of Faunus were celebrated at Rome on the Ides of this month, distinct from the Faunalia."-See 5th December.

The 300 and six Fabii are cut to pieces at the Cremera, B. C. 477. The Civil Government of Jamaica is first instituted, A. D. 1661. THE HAPPY REVOLUTION. William, Prince of Orange, and the Princess Mary, a daughter of the abdicating monarch, are proclaimed on this day (Wednesday), with the approbation of the Lords and Commons, Sovereigns of England, 1689. "She came into Whitehall laughing and jolly, as to a wedding, so as to seem quite transported; whilst the Prince, her husband, has a thoughtful countenance, is wonderful serious and silent, and seems to be very intent on affairs."

Burns writes from Ellisland to his friend Cunningham, 1790: "It is surely worthy of an inquiry, whether there be not such a thing as a science of life; whether method, economy, and fertility of expedients, be not applicable to enjoyment; and whether there be not a want of dexterity in pleasure, which renders our little scantling of happiness still less; and a profuseness and intoxication in bliss, which leads to satiety, disgust, and self-abhorrence. There is not a doubt but that health, talents, character, decent competency, respectable friends, are real substantial blessings; and yet do we not daily see those who enjoy many, or all of these good things, contrive, notwithstanding, to be as unhappy as others to whose lot few of them have fallen; I believe one great source of this mistake or misconduct, is owing to a certain stimulus, with us called ambition, which goads us up the hill of life, not as we ascend other eminences, for the laudable curiosity of viewing an extended landscape, but rather for the dishonest pride of looking down on others of our fellow-creatures, seemingly diminutive in humbler stations."
