Mr. Adams submitted the following resolution for consideration: Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to appoint a reading secretary, whose duty it shall be to attend in the Senate and assist the Secretary, and to do such duties, when the Senate is not in session, as the Secretary may require; and he shall receive per annum, out of the contingent fund of the Senate, the same salary as the chief clerk of the Senate. On motion by Mr. Seward that the Senate adjourn,

SATURDAY, MARCH 26, 1853.

The Senate proceeded to consider the resolution submitted by Mr. Badger the 17th instant, respecting the establishment of a naval depot at Beaufort, North Carolina; and

The resolution was agreed to.

The Senate proceeded to consider the resolution submitted by Mr. Jones, of Iowa, the 7th instant, in relation to the repairing and fitting up of rooms in the basement of the Capitol; and

The resolution was agreed to.

Mr. Cooper presented a letter from the honorable John P. Kennedy, late Secretary of the Navy, explanatory of the testimony given by him before a committee of the Senate in reference to certain moneys collected by Purser Welch from the officers and crews of the United States ships of war Vincennes and Vandalia; which was read.

The Senate resumed the consideration of the resolution submitted by Mr. Walker the 21st instant, to authorize the appointment of a member of the Committee on Indian Affairs to take testimony during the recess in relation to frauds alleged to have been committed by Alexander Ramsey, late Indian agent, and others; and,

On motion by r. Mallory,

Ordered, That the resolution lie on the table.

On motion by Mr. Sebastian,

Ordered, That the Committee on Indian Affairs be discharged from the further consideration of the subject of frauds alleged to have been committed by Alexander Ramsey, late superintendent of Indian affairs in California, and others, in the disbursement of money appropriated for the Sioux or Dacotah Indians.

Mr. Seward submitted the following resolution; which was considered, by unanimous consent, and agreed to:

Resolved, That the President of the United States be requested, if compatible with the public interest, to communicate to the Senate the correspondence between the honorable R. C. Schenck, envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary of the United States in Brazil, and the Secretary of State.

The resolution submitted yesterday by Mr. Adams, providing for the appointment of a "reading secretary" to the Senate, was read.

On motion by Mr. Mason,

Ordered, That the further consideration thereof be postponed until Monday next.

The Senate proceeded to consider the resolution submitted by Mr. Gwin the 17th instant, to authorize the purchase of Ringgold's maps and charts of the coast of California; and,

On motion by Mr. Mason,
