Ordered, That Francis W. Rice have leave to withdraw his memorial and papers.

Mr. Brodhead submitted the following resolution for consideration: Resolved, That the Secretary of the Treasury be required to procure, so far as practicable, and furnish the same to the Senate at the commencement of the next session of Congress, the following information, viz :

The aggregate amount of Federal, State, city, county, railroad, canal, and other corporation bonds, stocks, or other evidence of their debt held in Europe and other foreign countries on the 30th June, 1853, specifying separately, so far as the same can be ascertained, the amount of each of the above description of bonds and stocks.

Mr. Shields submitted the following resolution; which was considered, by unanimous consent, and agreed to.

Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate pay such clerks of the committees as have been employed during this extra session the usual compensation for the time they may be so employed.

Mr. Borland, from the Committee on Public Lands, to whom were referred, the 31st March, the nominations of James H. Birch and William Brown, reported.

Whereupon

Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of the said persons, agreeably to their nominations respectively.

Mr. Rusk, from the Committee on the Post-Office and Post-Roads, to whom were referred, the 29th March, the nominations of Daniel Watrous, William L. Tucker, John Miller, and, on the 31st March, that of C. R. Dixon, reported.

Mr. Gwin, from the Committee on Naval Affairs, to whom was referred, the 31st March, the nomination of John H. Briscoe, reported. Mr. Hamlin, from the Committee on Commerce, to whom were referred, the 31st March, the nominations of Philip F. Thomas, Edmund Wright, and Albert H. Clark, reported.

Mr. Hamlin, from the Committee on Commerce, to whom were referred, the 31st March, the nominations of James Polk and John Kettlewell, reported.

Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of the said persons, agreeably to their nominations, respectively.

On motion by Mr. Hamlin that the Senate reconsider the vote on advising and consenting to the appointment of James Polk and John Kettlewell,

It was determined in the affirmative.

Ordered, That the said nominations lie on the table.
