The following books will be found useful for those students who wish to enlarge their general knowledge, or to take up special fields of study.

BIOGRAPHIES

Life and Adventures of Oliver Goldsmith. John Forster. 4 volumes. 1848. An exhaustive and entertaining work.

Life of Goldsmith. Washington Irving. 1849.

Goldsmith. William Black. (English Men of Letters Series.) 1878. Life of Oliver Goldsmith. Austin Dobson. (Great Writers Series.)

1888.

These two books are the best short accounts.

Memoirs of the Life of the Right Honourable Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Thomas Moore. 2 volumes. 1825. The most important of the earlier biographies.

Sheridan. Mrs. Oliphant. (English Men of Letters Series.) 1884.
Life of Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Lloyd C. Sanders. (Great
Writers Series.) 1890. A sound critical study.
Sheridan, a Biography. W. Fraser Rae. 2 volumes. 1906. A very
valuable recent biography.

Goldsmith. Thomas Babington Macaulay. 1856.

Sterne and Goldsmith. In The English Humourists of the Eighteenth Century. William Makepeace Thackeray. 1853.

These two essays should be read in the order given.

MISCELLANEOUS

Shakespeare to Sheridan. Alwin Thaler.

English Drama of the Restoration and Eighteenth Century. George

Henry Nettleton.

Social England. Volume V. H. D. Traill.

The Four Georges. William Makepeace Thackeray.

The Virginians. William Makepeace Thackeray.

Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson should be consulted for its pictures of men and manners, no less than for its exact records of the great Doctor himself. Trivia, a delightfully amusing poem by John Gay, published in 1716, tells of "the art of walking the streets of London."
