SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER
THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL
EDITED WITH NOTES, LIVES OF GOLDSMITH AND SHERIDAN
AND ACTING OF THE COMEDIES
The attendance at our public schools is so large that the problem of reference-books and of library facilities in general is not an easy one to solve. The present edition of Three English Comedies meets this problem by bringing together in convenient form the equipment necessary for a careful study of the plays. The material is planned to satisfy the requirements of the College Entrance Board and the Board of Regents of the State of New York, while at the same time it is adapted to the needs of the general reader.
A full and informative body of notes has been prepared. The Appendix contains, besides biographies of Goldsmith and Sheridan, a sketch of London life in the eighteenth century, an outline of dramatic writing during the same period, and a brief account of the principal London Clubs and Coffee-houses. A special section is devoted to a discussion of acting the comedies in school. The illustrations are of unusual value. Twenty-four pictures have been provided. Of these seven have been drawn especially for this book; the others are all reproduced from authentic photographs or from famous contemporary paintings. In several instances well-known actors are shown in the various rôles.
Questions on the text are included in the notes, and a list of topics for oral or written work will be found at the
