DEATH OF PROFESSOR HEINRICH WILHELM DOVE.-We regret to have to record the death of Professor Dove. He was best known in this country by his meteorological investigations, especially those relating to the Law of Storms and the Distribution of Temperature over the Surface of the Globe; but his numerous memoirs, written between the years 1827 and 1873, show that he was a careful observer and investigator in magnetism, electricity, optics, and other departments of physics. It was, however, as a meteorologist that he justly earned a European reputation; to him our own Meteorological Office has, from time to time, been greatly indebted, and he was the most active promoter of the storm-signal department in Germany. As Professor and Lecturer at the Universities of Königsberg and Berlin, he was equally remarkable for the range and accuracy of his science, and for the lucidity with which he expounded his subjects. Born at Liegnitz in 1803, he died, full of honours, at Berlin, in the seventy-sixth year of his age. MARINE INVENTIONS. Monthly List of Patents-Communicated by Messrs. Wm. P.
