4 If o'er my sins I think to draw The curtains of the night, The fiery terrors of thy law

Would turn the shades to light.

5 The beams of noon, the midnight hour,
Are both alike to Thee:
O may I ne'er provoke that power
From which I cannot flee!

1 FAR

[blocks in formation]

AR as creation's bounds extend,
Thy mercies, Heav'nly Lord, descend;
To Thee thy various works shall raise
One chorus of perpetual praise.

2 Christians to Thee in hymns impart
The transports of a grateful heart,
The splendour of Thy kingdom tell,
And pleas'd on all thy wonders dwell.
3 Thy throne shall Nature's wreck survive,
Thy power through endless ages live;
Thy presence truth eternal guides,
Thy mercy o'er the world presides.

4 The humble spirit, bow'd with woe,
Thy all-supporting aid shall know;
Who seek thy help, with heart sincere,
Shall find thy presence ever near.

PSALM CXLVIII. Version 1. P. M.

YE

(From "The Spirit of the Psalms." The two first
Stanzas from the New Version.)
E boundless realms of joy
Exalt your Maker's Name;
His praise your song employ
Above the starry frame:

Your voices raise,

And Seraphim,

Ye Cherubim

To sing His praise.

Thou moon, that rul'st the night,
And sun, that guid'st the day,

Ye glitt'ring stars of light,

To Him your homage pay;

His praise declare,

Ye heav'ns above,

And clouds that move In liquid air.

Let earth her tribute bring,
With all that roam her plains,
Let ocean own her King,

With all the deep contains:

Your notes prolong, Ye warblers sweet;
His praise repeat, Who taught your song.
Let us, more blest than they,
Who nobler powers possess,
More worthy homage pay,
And heartfelt love express:

In grateful lays

In God rejoice,

Let ev'ry voice

And sing His praise !

PSALM CXLVIII. Version 2.

P. M.

1 BEGIN, my soul, th' exalted lay,
Let each enraptur'd thought obey,

And praise Jehovah's Name;

Let heav'n, and earth, and sea, and skies, In one melodious concert rise,

To swell th' inspiring theme.

2 Ye angels, catch the thrilling sound,
While all th' adoring thrones around
His boundless mercies sing;
Let ev'ry list'ning saint above
Wake all the tuneful soul of love,
And touch the sweetest string.

3 Join, all ye spheres, the vocal choir;
Thou sun, transcendent orb of fire,
And moon of milder light!
Whate'er a blooming world contains,
That wings the air, or skims the plains,
In songs of praise unite!

4 Let man, by nobler passions mov’d—
Man, who hath richer mercies prov'd-
In praise his pow'rs employ,
Spread God's eternal Name around,
Till heav'n's high arch flings back the sound,
The general burst of joy.

PSALM CL. P. M.

PRAISE the Lord, ye heav'ns adoreHim;
Praise Him, angels in the height:
Sun and moon rejoice before Him,
Praise Him all ye stars of light.

2 Praise the Lord, for He hath spoken,
Worlds his mighty voice obey'd;
Laws, which never shall be broken,
For their guidance hath He made.

3 Praise the Lord, for he is glorious,
Never shall his promise fail;
God hath made his saints victorious,
Sin and death shall not prevail.
4 Praise the God of our salvation,
Hosts on high his power proclaim ;
Heav'n and earth, and all creation,
Laud and magnify his Name!

HYMN I. P. M.

OSANNA to the living Lord! Hosanna to th' Incarnate Word! To Christ, Creator, Saviour, King, Let earth, let heaven, Hosanna sing! Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest! 2 Hosanna, Lord! thine angels cry; Hosanna, Lord! thy saints reply; Above, beneath us, and around, The dead and living swell the sound. Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest! 3 O Saviour! with protecting care, Return to this thy house of prayer: Assembled in thy sacred Name, Where we thy parting promise claim! Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest! 4 But, chiefest, in our cleansed breast, Eternal! bid thy Spirit rest,

And make our secret soul to be

A temple pure, and worthy Thee! Hosanna, Lord! Hosanna in the highest!
