OP

Be greatly cautious of your sliding hearts :
Dare not th' infectious sigh; the pleading look,
Downcast, and low, in meek submission drest,
But full of guile. Let not the fervent tongue,
Prompt to deceive, with adulation smooth,
Gain on your purpos'd will. Nor in the bower,
Where woodbines flaunt, and roses shed a couch,
While Evening draws her crimson curtains round,
Trust your soft minutes with betraying man.-Thomson.

We are principally concerned in knowing—not the origin of arts, or the recondite depths of science---not the histories of mighty empires, desolating the globe by their contentions---not the subtleties of logic, the mysteries of metaphysics, the sublimities of poetry, or the niceties of criticism : but what will become of us after death, and if we are to live again.

Gods may descend in factions from the skies,
And rivers from their oozy beds arise ;
Fiction may deck the truth with spurious rays,
And round the hero cast a borrow'd blaze.
Marlborough's exploits appear divinely bright,
And proudly shine in their own native light;
Rais'd of themselves, their genuine charms they boast,
And those who paint them truest praise them most.

Acts.

The eventful victory of the York partisans at Tewkesbury, 1471 : “ Distrust and dismay spread through the ranks of the Lancastrians : the rampart was but faintly defended : first the banner of the Duke of Gloucester, soon that of Edward, waved in the midst of the camp: and Somerset in despair, riding upto Lord Wenlock, at one stroke beat out his brains. The Queen and her son were made prisoners. The former was reserved to grace the conqueror's triumph ; the latter was led to his tent, and being asked what had brought him to England, boldly but ingenuously replied, “ To preserve my father's crown and my own inheritance.” Edward had the barbarity to strike the young prince in the face with his gauntlet : Clarence and Gloucester, or perhaps the knights in their retinue, dispatched him with their swords.” It was twelve years after this tragedy, upon the same day, that Richard was acknowledged by the chief nobility, Protector of the realm, and of the person of his nephew, Edward V. son of the last monarch; an event which took place in the palace of the Bishop of London, 1483.
