Oliver GOLDSMITH C SELECTED POEMS EDITED WITH INTRODUCTION AND NOTES BY AUSTIN DOBSON Oxford AT THE CLARENDON PRESS 1887 [All rights reserved] PREFATORY NOTE. THE extent of this selection from the poems of Goldsmith is sufficiently defined in the concluding page of the ‘Introduction'; and as explicit information with regard to text and authorities is supplied in the 'Notes,' it only remains for me to add here that a large amount of Goldsmith-literature, both new and old, has been consulted in the preparation of the book, and that the quotations, with but few exceptions, have been made from the original sources. Not much of moment is now to be gleaned upon the ground travelled so intently by Prior, Forster, and the rest of the editors and annotators; but I trust, nevertheless, that, in more than one instance, I have been able to make some serviceable supplement to the labours of my predecessors.
